If I am correct, the term "matching numbers" refers to the numbers on the frame and the engine matching the VIN plate, right?

Well, what happens if an engine block is replaced and a replacement plate is made? Is it still "matching numbers"? Or is it in actuality a fraudulent act? Am I giving it too much thought?

My new (don't I wish!) 1600 has had at least the block replaced with one of barely more-recent vintage, but the VIN plate is wasted. I am going to buy one from Sid, and just didn't know about the ethic of having the new plate reflect the current state of affairs.

It would then be "matching", but wasn't what left the factory. Not that it really matters, but I was just wondering what different people's feelings are on the subject. I'm sure I'm going to do it anyway, but sometimes I like to get viewpoints other than my own.

By the way, it "feels like home" to have a roadster around again.

I didn't know they swaped the block. I never checked that. I was told that it was just rebuilt. Sorry. As for the numbers, nissan built all the replacement blocks first, then used the rest of the blocks starting from where they decided they had enough replacements. At least this is true for the U20s. The blocks don't match the frame. Have you found any other surprises? I hope nothing bad if you have. You might check the exhaust manafold as they are prone to cracking. I didn't see anything but I didn't look very hard.

I knew the block number wouldn't match the frame, but the VIN plate has a number stamped on it indicating what block they put in when they built it. It shows a 55xxx on the plate, but there's a 58xxx on the block. You have to get the VIN plate just right in the light, and then you can just barely make out the printing that WAS on it, so I was going to do another plate anyway.

About the only other major thing I found is that when "they" repaired the left front, they put on a fender from an early 67, not a late one. Probably asked for the fender for a "67 Datsun" and installed what they got without checking. It was done way back. The car was originally red, then was painted a dark greenish turquoise, then a dark yellow, then light yellow, and finally white . I found all those layers just behind the cockpit, and also on the left front fender. If I strip off all the paint, the car will probably weigh 15 lbs less! Other than a couple of dents and some minor rust, there isn't too much to do to the body.

I planned on installing a header instead of the exhaust manifold anyway, do it doesn't really matter if it's cracked. I'll be working on the engine after I decide which direction I want to go, street or autocross. Ditto with the suspension. I used to have the full-factory race suspension (springs and shocks), but I wonder if I could stand the ride now. At least I could dodge the potholes!

Good thing you didn't try to start it with the "gas" (and I use the term very loosely) that's in the tank. It smells like paint thinner. Uck! There IS oil in the crankcase, and it looks clean, just about a quart low. Would probably have been enough to lubricate adequately.

I think that when I paint, it will be "Grabber Blue" from a '71 Mustang. It's close to what I painted my first one, but a little darker. Then all the chrome will be powdercoated flat black. I'll do this no matter which direction I decide to build it.

As to the new VIN plate. I am putting one on the '65 when I get it done. I feel that if it is done without the intent to defraud someone then it is okay. If you were to later try to sell your "matching numbers" roadster without revealing the true facts then that would be unethical.

The only thing that will be left from the actual '65 is the body. I am using a later 2 liter frame for the front disc brakes, axle brace, 3.7 rearend, recirculating steering box and cross member tranny mount for the 5 speed. I will run with a 1600 until I get my stroker built for her. There will be nothing matching numbers on that car--and if I ever sell it the truth will be told. Which is highly unlikely. That I will sell it that is.
