Cross Refernce Top (front calipers)

Post by Andy_In_SD »

If you need front calipers (or pistons), they were licensed off of the Dunlop caliper design used on Jag -XKE's and other 60's Jags. That is why if you look at the markings on your calipers they say "dunlop", "sumitomo". The tooling was not changed to remove the "dunlop" name. You can look up a Jag shop and get parts (ie: British Auto Parts is a chain I would get them & rebuild kits from back in the early 90's). They are 100% identical other than the "Sumitomo" stamping.

If you research, you will find that the 311's were heavily loaded with licensed designs and components (Austin Healey, Stromburg, Dunlop etc...) . At times those cross references can save you a big headache as you seek out a non existent part .

Of course, 25 to 30 years ago that knowledge saved your butt, now we have the internet and a ton of vendors!

Most or at least some of us know that the rubber kits will work. Question I have is the caliper holder the calipers bolt to the same too? That would be funny.

Dumb newb question: Anyone ever tried 240Z calipers?

They seem to be a very similar design, only with an internal crossover tube instead of the external tube.

Sumitomo 240z calipers are vast improvement over the original Roadster/Girling/Jag design.

They rarely fail and last for years. I have used them on a couple roadsters and they fit under a stock wheel and 14" Libres without issue.

Problem is the mounting bolt pattern is wrong so you have to build some (very carefully designed) brackets. You also have to machine the OD of the rotors down a little to fit the Z caliper. Other thank that, they work great with no master cylinder modifications etc. The pad areas is about 50% larger. They stop great without fade if using good quality pads.

Since the 240z calipers require new brackets, the Volvo swap is somewhat cheaper and easier.

If you are going to the trouble to fab brackets the 300zx swap is nice, but requires bigger wheels if I'm not mistaken.

I believe the 2 1/8" Girling Jag Mk2 calipers are nearly identical, but you can buy cylinders cheaper from roadster vendors.

If you look at XK's unlimited, the 1/4" wheel cylinder bolts, bleed screws, cross over tubes for series I xke are likely a direct fit. All the threads are the same. Rotors could possibly be made to work as well by machining a simple hat/adapter. I may check into that for fun.

I could make the 240z caliper brackets, but they would be fairly expensive. Jt

The Dunlop calipers and pads (used on the MGA twin cam) are the same as the roadsters but are no cheaper in price.
