Sounds like it could be the coil. Is it getting hot? You can check the specs with a multimeter.

While a bad coil can open when hot then close again when cool, it usually takes longer for the cool down to take place. Your situation sounds like running out of fuel due to a partial blockage, or perhaps sucking air, or as already suggested perhaps a lack of venting at the tank. I would start by carefully inspecting the fuel line for leaking fuel after it has set for awhile. A slight leak will not even drip on the ground, but can suck significant air.

could be a cap issue , when it cuts off use a screwdriver and ground it in the spark plug wire and see if you have spark

No leaks I have the stock fuel lock fuel cap coil is new but could be faulty when I hold down gas pedal to the floor it will eventually start and run!

I don't think the 70 should have the locking cap, it needs a vented cap, if this is the case, that would explain you symptoms almost perfectly. Try loosening the cap when it starts to die and see if it sucks in air at the cap, indicating a vacuum. IF it does, and then starts to run OK, you may well have the source.

Have you checked inside your fuel tank?
Try opening up the tank through the access panel and see if you have sediment or otherwise floating around the pick up? 15 minutes and will eliminate fuel delivery from the tank as possible culprit.

I thought the 70 was unique in that it had a non-vented cap and air cam in through all the emission paraphernalia in the trunk. If it does have a non vented cap and the emission stuff is missing and plugged, that could be an issue. If it is the case, pull over and immediately pop the gas cap when it stalls, see if it sucks in a bunch of air.

Dann has info here. http://www.datsunroadster.com/PIC_PAGES ... 172-xx.htm

Crap in the tank is a big possibility as is a leak on the hose to the fuel pump letting it suck air.
