Hardtop rubber seals

Post by tdbob1 »

I have 3 hardtops; 2 from Snugtop and 1 from an unknown manufacturer. It has a crown emblem on the outside vinyl. I need to replace all the rubber seals; header, door windows and around the other windows on 1 of these hardtops. Steele Products doesn't appear to have exact matches, so I'm asking if anyone has sourced these items?

There are a few threads that talk about suitable replacments however, if you must have an exact match, I think you're outta luck.

Time to improvise for now, while still searching. Someone I know found the ORIGINAL engine for his Ferrari 40 years later. And another Bentley owner found the ORIGINAL body 70 years later.

I am reviving this thread in hopes to get feedback about the suitable replacements mention earlier.

I posted part numbers for replacement seals which are suitable. They are sold by McMaster Carr so do a search.

Hard Top Weatherstrip - Update w/ Part Numbers
Postby jamesw » Sat Jan 19, 2013 6:39 pm

Hope this helps everyone.

I just finished off my hard top w/ weatherstrip from Mcmaster Carr

I used part numbers:

12335A74 $2.78 per foot
12335A71 $3.63 per foot

For the window seals and the top to car seal. Need 8' of each of those. I got 10 just to be safe.

And for the front I used:

93085K68 $.96 per foot

Also got 10 feet

I also have a hard top with a crown emblem and what appears to be the letter "I". It came with my 70' 1600. Do you have any more info on this hard top?

Thanks,
Ron

Your hardtop with the crowm emblem is most probably a Royal Coachman brand made by Dynaplastics. They made three versions for roadsters the most common one having a round porthole style window, then ones with a opening rectangular window and ones with no side windows. Even though they made tops for almost all the small sport cars of the era, they went out of business in the 70s.

The same weatherstrip was used across all the tops they made for any of the various car marques from what I have seen. I have not been able to find any weatherstrip of the same size available. What I have found of similar shape is only about half the size. You will have to make do with whatever you find available.

I posted the same question a few days ago and got the answer "Restoration Supply". I bought from them a year ago for another vehicle and they sent their catalog. They have many many different shapes and sizes, with end view drawings of each, with precise dimensions. If you have your old strips I can't imagine that you would not find them in their catalog. The product is very high quality too. very solid, and not light weight with thin skin as some repops are.

Great information. I'm at the point in my restoration where the hard/soft top is next. Any idea of a source for latches? I don't even care if they are original - anything that works is OK with me.

Thanks

Dave - that's probably it. Mine doesn't have an side windows. I just need to locate some latches. Any source for those?

Ron, post pictures of the inside of your top. Many were made to use original latches, but some had custom latches.
