Eating Fuel Pumps

My 411 SSS (with a 1600 R engine) keeps eating fuel pumps (now on number 3). I am finding sediment in the glass fuel filter bowls and when I take apart the fuel pump I see particulates in the catch screen, but only a small number (<5). But something in the fuel pump ceases to work even though the diaphragm looks fine. Are the particles lodging in the check valves? What is breaking in the fuel pump? If I replace the check valves will that fix the pump?
As to the source of the problem I've taken the gas tank out and inspected it -- it looks clean and shiny inside (its galvanized) - so I gave it a good dump with water and reinstalled (haven't restarted it yet). So I'm not sure where this crap is coming from ---
This car runs a glass bowl filter, I'm thinking of installing another filter in line with the glass bowl filter. The PO had installed an electric fuel pump at the tank which I've re-hooked up but I"m leary of running for safety reasons. I'd much prefer to keep the mechanical pump for both originality and safety.
Thanks
John
