Hello from the Indianapolis area

Just thought I'd say hello, and apologize in advance for all the noob questions I'll be asking over the next months/years.
Just picked up a '69 SRL that needs quite a bit of restoration, so I'll probably be peppering the forums with random "is this correct", "what is this", and "help" -style questions frequently (when I can't find or give up searching the wiki/book/etc). This car is the first I've owned old enough to not have a 17-digit VIN (and older than me as well), so it's a little adjustment

.
From the little bit of cleaning/disassembling I've done so far, it looks like a previous owner did some... "creative" repairs, so it looks like I've got a long road of work and learning ahead.
Hopefully there's some kind members in the Indy area that wouldn't mind me taking a peek at their cars and maybe taking some photos for comparison/reference

Welcome,
You have found a great forum community to share with, and enrich.
If you haven't already done it, I encourage you to scan all of the many forum topics we have here. This community has an incredible population of helpful and extremely talented folks.
The forums span every aspect of Roadster 1.0 to 9.5..... speed reading thru the different sections will give guidence and knowledge about your car, and in my case, it gave me answers to issues I had not yet experienced. The search function takes a while to master, and there is even a section describing how to best use the function. Posting pictures is one other challenging aspect of the forum, a task I need much help with......there is a section on this to,.... I gotta revisit it soon.
Well good luck, and welcome to the group....Its to late for you, you already drank the Cool Aid........

Here's some pics I snapped this morning when I went out to change the clocks in the cars; I've already started removing stuff obviously (just top bits off windshield frame yesterday, getting ready to remove windshield):
One thing I was wondering: is it preferred (or disliked) on this board to start a personal "build" thread? I was thinking it may help to keep all my beginner questions in one place, as opposed to an endless barrage of new threads for small questions...
(I ask this having two "what is this?" questions ready to go)

Welcome. People here love build threads, as we get to experience people's cars and their work as it goes along. We also like stories about how you came to Roadsters, how you got to this car, what you've done in the past, etc. So many people here who just love their cars and those who own them... You wont find a better bunch of car people than Roadster owners, especially on this forum. There are no stupid questions, and nobody here is going to flame you for asking about things that have been done a million times, so no worries! Let us know what your level of car knowledge is and we'll be better able to guide you. You'll probably find the Roadster to be much more simple than a modern car, for sure!

Just post your thread in "Members Rides" section, that's what it's there for!

Nice 1600... but do I spy a Golf R? Nice choice! I daily drive a GTI.
I have a 1970 1600 and a '78 280Z.

Doppelganger!
I'm just finishing up a 69 1600. I also have a Golf R. I also live in Indy (Broad Ripple).

Ya. '13 4-door, but unfortunately for me, it's my wife's car--I DD the boring Subaru. The VW love is strong at our house tho--I used to have a GTI VR6, and had a '04 R32 for 9+ years. I've warned my wife that if they start selling the Mk7 Golf R Wagon in the states, the Subaru would be gone in an instant.
And for posterity's sake, it's a 2000, not 1600 (but the pics aren't that great).
I'm in Brownsburg myself (I put Indy area as a generalization)
