KNN Air Filters
Anyone know which model will fit on the SU carbs?

for the 1600.
I have a K&N on my roadster, it works well, but it is a bit hard to bend it and try to tighten it in place, but its simple.

I used the FRAM CA351 in the same manner as the K&N. It has a wire mesh around the filter element making it slightly harder to bend, but works fairly well. And a lot cheaper then the K&N.
I also had to trim the rubber bead that runs around the rubber part of the filter.

air filter
I go with the stock Nissan brand air filter. It is $15 and for me, works the best. Sam

RE:Filters
Scotty,
What year is your car again? It is not in your signature. If it is an early car even those round K&N filters will not work if you are swapping out the brake master. The stock motor and carb setup make it very difficult to uses anything but a stock filter setup. The only other one you might be able to get to fit is a ITG with the foam filter. You have to make your own backing plate to fit the SUs. Still if you were changing out the brake master that would not work either. They left no fudge room with the stock setup short of leaving off the filter completely. Now an SR motor gives you plenty of room even with an early setup. Hardly a reason to do an engine swap though.

I am surprised that no one has an answer for this. My suggestion is to call Moss Motors or Victoria British and order an MGB catalog. I went on their website and saw several different K&N filters that may work. I recall that some MGs had offset filters which would help. Another thought is to get a ram pipe (velocity stack) and put a sock filter over it. If I have my brit lingo right, the HS-4 is the same size as the carbs on the 1600 and the HS-6 is the same as the 2000. This is the smallest dimension filtration.
For a more accurate fit, you need to give a few more details such as year of car, type of master cylinder etc. Why are you changing it out? My guess is that you are going to the volvo or some other brake conversion. An easier way out may be to get a Tilton brake master cylinder as it can be ordered in a variety of diameters and configurations...

Scotty,
I have not driven a car with the volvo brakes, but know a few folks that have them. My suggestion would be that you get factory Nissan parts and redo the stock brakes. When they work right, you have excellent brakes.
If you want to do the Volvo thing, have at it. The aircleaner issue will be just one of your worries as the dual master cylinder will necessitate a virtual complete repipe of your brake system. (gotta put that second line somewhere!)

Sid,
Your right about the SU-Hitachi carbs. The HS4 is indeed (as confirmed by an MG shop here) physically the same as the carbs on the 1600. I am getting some velocity stacks and "sock" air-filters from them, so any K&N etc. that is designed for use with the HS4 will work on the 1600.
While I cannot confirm with the 2000, it would make sense that it follows and the HS6 would be the same as the 2000 Hitachi.

Yup, the HS 6 is the same dimensionally as the 2000 and the Z car carbs. (Rumor has it that some british car owners secretly use the Hitachi carbs because they are made better - I know of one guy sourcing several to put on a custom supercharged V12 Jaguar sedan!)

Scotty,
I found this link for you:
http://www.jetlink.net/~okayfine/su/knfilters.html
Note that the Brit K&N filters are better than the US made. The US is plated steel while the Brit are Stainless. They cost twice as much, but are a final solution if they fit right.
