Seat Belts

My car when I bought it came with vintage racing style harnesses attached to the roll bar. I would like to replace then with regular every day seatbelts. My car is a 68 2000. I imagine it originally had lap belts. Is there any aftermarket seat belts that will bolt in and will I be able to somehow safely rig shoulder belts? If anyone has done it, can I see photo and ask where you bought from? Are you happy with the set up? Thanks.

Just about any 3 point harness can be put into a post 67 roadster with no mods. They originally had a 3 point setup - two for the lap belt (probably where your lap belt is mounted now) and a third on the rear inner wheel well. If you look, you will probably see the bolt hole. JC Whipme has replacement belts with retractors and without if I am not mistaken. The local Discount auto parts store used to carry lap only belts. I never looked for the 3 pointers.

I don't know if this is true for '68s, but I've been having a heck of a time fining a 3-point harness that will bolt in without modification. I've tried Corbeau & Sparco 2" harnesses, the lap belts were too long. I just bought a pair of Schroth 2" harnesses and the lap belt works but the 3rd leg of the harness is too long. It looks like I'll have to add another mounting point to the floor of the package shelf to make it work. I'm going to give Schroth a call tomorrow to make sure that the package shelf will be OK for mouting that third anchor point.

It seems that the mounting points (for the lap belt at least) in my '70 are closer to the driver than those in the pre-68 cars.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I would prefer not to use harnesses since A. They are a pain to use every time you get in and out, especially with 2 drivers. B. I don't think they are street legal in my state, I know people that have failed inspection with them. I was just looking for a regular old seat belt like you'd find in a modern day Toyota or Nissan, lap belt and shoulder. I will check JC Whitney. I thought I had read somewhere that 68 cars and later had shoulder belts at one point, not sure where the shoulder point attaches, safely. Attaching it to the parcel shelf seems like too severe an angle to be safe.

I was referring to stock 3 points - not aftermarket performance stuff. There is a chassis bolt on the rear shelf - directly below where the stock shoulder harness mounts. You could use that.

Sorry, I misunderstood.

I know that I saw someone on the forum or on the email list that installed a set of "stock" Nissan 3-point belts. I'm not sure what car they came from. He had the B pillar hoop mounted on his rollbar and I think that the recoiler was mounted behind the seat.

Just picked up a set of belts (they say KYB on the back) with the shoulder belt from the pick-a-part. Came out of a 70-71 datsun truck. I've got them mounted on the inner wheel well bolt and the shoulder part fits great.

Anyone got part numbers for belts that work? Mine are just too long and end up buckling on my left side.
