How much would it cost to modify a regular 1600 chassis to fit a SR 20 engine?
Who would do it?
It costs too much to rebuild an original R1600.

Check out all the engine swap posts regarding SR20. Spriso has a jig for loan that can be used to assist in this. cost is going to depend on how much you, or a tradesperson is doing. the jig will go a long way to speeding and easing the project thus controlling costs.

Wow I hope to rebuild ours for less than half that and make it a stroker too.
Even so, Id bet that the all in cost for an sr20 conversio will end up north of 5k.
Either way, good luck with your decision. Imvsure youll have a nice car in the end.

5K is in the U20 world.
How badly is the engine trashed? What parts do you need and who is going to do it - you??

If u do a sr conversion u will get a 5 speed . If u factor in putting a 5 speed in after the r 16 rebuild ,that could be another 1000 to 1500 dollars . There may be additional cost rebuilding your r16 are your carb rebuilt that could be 800 for professional rebuild .Do you have a ei ignition? that costs is over 300 . good luck .

To do a complete rebuild for a R16 with pistons, valves, waterpump, fuelpump, gears, chain, camshaft etc. you will pay 3 or 4000 dollar, if you do a lot of things by yourself.

It all depends on what is involved in a rebuild and who is rebuilding the engine. Here is a breakdown of what a rebuild can cost for an R16:
PARTS
pistons and rings $400-600
rod bearings $60-100
main bearings $140-160
cam bearings $45
timing chain kit $150-200
gasket kit $200
oil pump $250-400
water pump $180-250
frost plug kit $50
lifters $80
clutch kit $300-400
motor mounts $75
carb rebuild $700
cylinder head rebuild $100-500 valves, rocker assembly
head stud kit $125
reground cam $200
distributor upgrade $100-350
fuel pump $50-200
block paint $25-50
speedi sleeve $50

machine work
$600-1500 depending what you get done
cylinder rebore
boil block
crank resizing
flywheel resurface
cam bearing install
resize rods
valve grind
resurface head
resurface block
balancing

labour to rebuild and break in a fresh motor
~25-35 hours
Pick and choose your options and it can add up in a hurry. I have given a choice between some aftermarket prices and genuine Nissan. Some part can be had for less. if you opt to not install new pistons, oil pump, or rebuilt carbs you can cut costs. You can freshen up an engine . with new rings but it is not rebuilt.

Way less than all that if you use forklift parts. See Motor Power Inc website or your local Forklift supply for the H20 parts. Nice if you can stay STD and reuse your pistons.

Thanks everyone! ! Now that I have some ideas.
I spent a lot of money on the body already. So I going to think really hard about this.

DatsunMax,
There are other engine swaps out there that don't require as many (if any) frame modifications like the KA24. Have you driven an SR-powered roadster lately? You are welcome to take mine for a spin. I would also recommend driving a 2000 as well, since you are not keeping it stock the U20/5 speed could also swap in!
We could also arrange for you to drive an R16 roadster too if that helps your decision.
