Keys for datsun locks

Post by DivinDave »

Thought I would pass on a great source to get keys for Datsun locks that you don't have a key for. The 1600 I bought had no keys for the console or gas cap locks, so I got the code numbers that were stamped into them and contacted Stuart in Australia at http://www.keys4classics.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; by email.

He was able to confirm the key blank type and that the codes for my locks was correct and is sending me the cut to code keys for what is really very little money. The keys4classics web site has detailed info about classic Datsun keys to help you figure out what you need and then it's just a email to get it sent to you. This is the second time I used them to get keys for one of my Datsun locks and both times Stuart was very helpful and knew exactly what I needed to fit the lock. Local locksmiths just were pretty clueless on the older car locks, so this is a very good option.

Nice!

In your research did you come across anybody that would rekey a set of existing roadster locks. I think I have 3 different keys while I should have just 2...

Nope, not yet. I too have more keys than was the original issue.

The door & trunk locks should be pretty easy to re-key by any locksmith who has been around awhile. I plan on re-keying my gas cap to match my doors since they have the same base key type.

@Greg - thought the gas cap key was a different type - mine certainly is. So three - ignition, door/trunk/console (depending on year) and gas cap. At least on my 70

Bump for updates.

My trunk lock is trashed and I think the key that was given to me is supposedly the original one. No idea if it works in the doors either. If I were to cough up money to buy a new lock with key, is it possible to have the door locks rekeyed to match that new trunk key? Anyone have expereince with this?

If this works, then I can buy a key from this place and have a nice pair of keys and I think I would only have two keys total. Ignition and then the locks

I've been looking into this as well. In order to change the pins in the lock cylinder, you have to disassemble it. This basically means trashing the outer bezel of the lock face. I talked to a couple old timer lock smiths in this area and they both told me this. So unless you have replacement face bezels, you might be in trouble.

I hope I am wrong as I have some locks I'd like to make one key sets out of. Hopefully someone will chime in with more information along this line.

I could not figure out how to re-key my gas cap without destroying the cap so that never happened.

There are numbers on the gas cap lock and my locksmith made keys for gas caps that I had without keys.
So far 3 for 3!

That is really a great find. I've always re-keyed or had them re-keyed over the years, but it's much better using the numbering system. Well done sir!

I never figured out how to ectract the cylinder out of the housing. I destroyed one gas cap while trying. It was a gas cap where with a broken key or something hammered into the key hole.
I could not extract it nor could the locksmith. That gas cap went to lock heaven ;)

JT68 wrote:I'm just going from memory here, but on the gas cap,the only way the cylinder will come out is with the key. You remove the pieces that unbolt from the back, but the cylinder will not come out of the housing unlexs you can unlock it. As I recall, that is the trick.

Thanks JT. Good to know. I may try it on one of my good ones and test it out.

Can someone post pics of where these serial numbers are on the locks? I think the trunk lock would be the easiest to take a picture of, and it would also help me the most :)

I know the gas caps have numbers. I don't know about the doors and trunk.
