So I am going to the JCCS Show this year and will be visiting my son in Irvine for a long weekend.

He is taking the day off on Friday from Grad school and I want to know where can we go carve up some canyons? Like Dave Scholz does in this Z? " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Any other events going on that weekend? One of his professors has a low mileage 1997 Miata but won't be loaning it to us for any hoonage.

Those canyon shots I believe were taken on Angeles Crest Hwy, from La Canada to Wrightwood..Always beautiful, but you better plan your run around the traffic to get to the road..


The views however, are often worth the hassle getting there..

You won't see snow this time of year, but you often will into June..



Closer to Irvine, Ortega Hwy from San Clemente to Palm Springs is gorgeous, except for a few mile stretch in the middle.. This can get some pretty serious traffic though, especially during rush hour, when you will see streams of commuters crossing..



I personally love Glendora Mountain Road, along with Azusa Canyon and Mt. Baldy road, they make an amazing complex of roads, and since they don't go anywhere, they tend to have almost no traffic on them.






And then, of course, there is always the Malibu Canyons, including Mulholland Hwy.
Stunning stuff. but a Friday trip from Irvine means hours of traffic. If you can schedule the day to drive up around 11am, and back around 8:30 or 9, it's not so bad..

PS: for all of these, please check to make sure the brakes are in shape before you leave.. All but Malibu involve climbing to minimum 4000 feet(Angeles Crest goes to 7900+), and there are plenty of places in Malibu to kill brakes..

If anyone knows the roads in So Cal it is RCMike. I took wrote some of these down as I have yet to venture on some of them.

And what are the chances that rcmike drove all of those roads in one day? My vote is yes. Do tell mike.

If they would reopen the 6 miles that are closed between Angeles Crest and Azusa Cyn. (they do, but only for emergencies) it would be a pretty easy drive... But you would add a couple more..

Starting on the 5 in San Juan Capistrano, 74-243-10-18-138-2-210-118-405-27-Mullholland Hwy-1 south

Off the 2 you would drop onto GMR..

Too bad they won't open it, it's been closed "for repairs" since 1978..

Edit: probably a good thing it's closed though.. keeps GMR isolated and empty for people who like driving..
