painting of non body components
I am slowly trying to rebuild my 68 2000 but at the same time keeping it running. Are there standard color for non body component? I like to take small section to clean, rebuild and paint. Car horn, voltage regulator, relays, radiator support brackets, car jack, SU air cleaner housing, radiator coolant overflow can, radiator shroud, gas tank, gas filler neck, soft top frame and rims.

What I did for my '65 1500, based on what the parts appeared to be originally: -
Horns, gloss black
VR lid, gloss black
Relays, zinc chromate [gold]
Rad. support brackets, vertical, gloss black
Jack, bright yellow
SU air cleaner housing, red/orange, matched the inside colour of the housing to a mix.
Coolant O/F, N/A
Radiator shroud, gloss black
Gas tank, gloss black
Gas filler tube, zinc chromate [gold]
Soft top frame, gloss black
Rims, wheel silver
Horns, gloss black
VR lid, gloss black
Relays, zinc chromate [gold]
Rad. support brackets, vertical, gloss black
Jack, bright yellow
SU air cleaner housing, red/orange, matched the inside colour of the housing to a mix.

related question, for the gloss black components, what are people using? Is there a specific gloss black that matches the stock gloss black better than others?

Rustoleum gloss black comes very close and is durable.
Will trade guitars for roadsters, food, shelter, clothes, etc, etc.

Re rustoleum - works - try for high heat - not that you need it, but it is more durable - and like everything else - preparation is paramount - clean, sand, fill, prime, paint etc.
Personally I prefer Satin finish, but I have NO idea what ORIGINAL looked like - just my preference.
BTW For later cars - jack bits are silver(ish) or maybe zinced.
With the soft top frame (minus the bow)- I had mine locally blasted and powder coated - cost $65(ish) - SOOO much more durable and powder coating (because of application method) doesn't leave those bits that you miss because of directional spraying (there must be a word for that!) - Just take off the plastic knobs.

I use a variety of Acrylic Chassis Black paint.
It comes in matte, semi gloss and full gloss and is reasonably cheap and easy to spray.
I also sprayed the soft top frame with Gloss black and had a few "can't get to bits" due to folded hinges etc.
Touched them up afterwards.
One thing you need to watch with powder coating I have found: if the coating is applied too thick, things won't operate very well.
e.g. hinge bits, sliding mechanisms, threaded holes etc.
