missing bad above 3k under load!!

Post by impinhigh »

Hi All,

Been working on the white 68 (stock) R16 over the last few days and once again stuck.
Car idles great, carbs sync'd up very nice and air fuel is also good.

Problem:

Pulls out of the garage and rev's up to about 3500 rpm's
after shifting into 2nd rev's up to 3k and then starts to run on 2 cylinders. Some times I can nurse it threw but sometimes not
Advance is hooked up and is timed to 16 deg TDC

TIA for any help!! Be nice to drive the car!!

Matt,

It still sounds like you have fuel issues. I would suspect an incorrectly set float to cause a problem like that. It will idle all day but once you put it under a load it will starve for fuel. Which two cylinders is it? Front or back? Double check the carb you are having the issues with. Do the pistons in the carbs drop with a clunk? What weight oil are you using in the pot dampners? I once had a loose needle that would stick in the nozzle once in a awhile which made the car run on two cylinders. That one was real tough to trouble shoot. Hang in there and you will have a smooth purring machine at all RPMs sooner or later.

i may disagree i was going through this exact problem...I replaced points and everything..ended up the distributor bushings are worn out, so when underload it broke up really bad. I was chasing a fuel problem the whole time. Wiggle the shaft back and forth and see what it does. Any movement means that it is either breaking the gap or closing it when it is not supposed to. I spent a good while chasing this problem. it seems a common problem on a points car thats 30+ but everyone kept tellign me it was a fuel problem.

If it is try to get Garys EI dizzy great guy have never heard anything bad about his products great praise here.

good luck.

Yes, I have experienced the wobbly distributor shaft as well. It will definitely cause performance issues and is hard on points. You can check that easily enough and it could not hurt. Let us know what you find. EI dizzy is the only way to go if you want my opinion. 8)

Dizzy appears fine

To late to fire up so will update more tonight?
Steve, tell me more about the fuel filter you mentioned.
I've never seen one at Kragens.

RE:Fuel Filter

Matt,

It is a pretty common item. I do not recall what it costs but it is money well spent. The housing is a cylinder shape clear glass with adapters for each end for different size fuel line. It screws apart so you can replace the filter from time to time. The filters come in three packs and I always keep one in the glove box. I like it because you can clearly see what is going on with the filter. Well almost clearly-nothing is perfect. I had major issues with rust in the gas tank on my Z. Even when a filter does not look dirty it can be plugged. I was stuck on the side of the road one day but not for long. I whipped out my spare filters-replaced it and off I went. I have since had the tank cleaned and sealed but still change the filter every so often. Pep Boys has the filters as well.
