race roadster
Today we started to remove the engine from a race roadster I got a few years ago to see what the condition is and to make it race ready in the future.

Re: race roadster
Fascinating! Please keep those pictures coming Richard.
I especially like the 'breathing holes' in the inner fender for the carbs. Knows by another name as "conduits to throw rocks from your tires into your carbs.'
I like the brake vent drier hoses though, and have often thought about doing those.
Cheers
James

Re: race roadster
Did you all see the little "pebble indents" on the intake ports? My friend Steve and I were discussing crazy mods that people have tried over the years, and this "golf ball" indents is one of them. No offense Richard, but this was done by people who "don't understand airflow in an engine" per Steve. I wonder if you'll find it's pebbled all through the intake. It's probably not hurting anything (?), but if rebuilt you might consider returning it to a normal surface. Pretty interesting mods done and some nice pieces there! Are you going to go through the engine?

Re: race roadster
Interesting. There are some that claim that the dimpled intake runners increase flow and power. One guy on the LS1 tech forum claims to be a tech inspector that tested a dimpled intake and got 23+ horsepower on a 650 hp engine with no other mods. Given the number of other mods on the car, someone believed in them...

Re: race roadster
The speed shops and machine shops here in Houston can all flow-test a cylinder head. So it wouldn't be that hard to "pebble" a head and test it out. I'd be happy to do it w/ an old head I have if someone wants to send me a check
Next question: what is the big wheel on the end of the throttle shaft on the front carb? Is that like an adjustable linkage plate?
Cheers
James

James, that looks like a home grown spring mount on the end of the carb.

Re: race roadster
I understand that completely. However flow testing in the shop has never supported this in his experience, and he's had a few head in with it. As you know, what's claimed on the Internet is not always true! However, if someone can show quality data, I'm open!spl310 wrote:Interesting. Re: race roadster
Hmmm... The theory is that the dimpling breaks up the laminar flow and keeps the fuel atomized. It doesn't claim to increase flow. Would be interesting to see if someone could test it out on a dyno and see what the results are.

Re: race roadster
Interesting post. I'm doing a major re-furb on my car and I've thought about something like the fender well cutouts. My idea was to fab up a filter box and mount it in a cut out in the fender well to provide a cool(er) air source for the carbs. Don't know if it would really make any difference but it's fun to keep the old gray matter working.

Steve,
If your vintage racing by the rules that's not legal for period correct SCCA production cars.

It looks like they used the plates as shims for camber adjustment?fj20spl311 wrote:Is that a different spindle or just a different lower ball joint......very interesting......
