We call them prawns and very rarely cook them on the BBQ.

When I was in Australia in the late '80s I did not have a prawn from the barbie, nor did I see Paul Hogan at a pub. However I did have one of the most memorable and delicious burgers - it had everything on it. A fried egg and beets stand out as unexpected toppings.

Just a re-up and a reminder - TWO (yes count them) TWO Aussies are visiting our fair shores and are staying with me in Van Nuys on February 5th. In honor of our antipodal cousins, I am having a barbie that afternoon/evening. And to windy - if Paul Hogan decides to call prawns - shrimp - who am I to argue? (see prior youtube whatsit)
So far I have RCMike and Linda confirmed, with a possible Garm (if a 'possible' Garm can be comprehended <G>)
Anyone else out there??
I will be cooking some chuck(chicken to us), and providing a mess o' beans.
Pls let me know if you intend to come and what you might bring in a potluck sort of thing. Snacks (salsa/chips) or bevies would work.
As a member of the country that used to OWN Australia, I am keen to show them that the fact that they (mostly) don't want/need us that we/I hold no grudges and to welcome them to ANOTHER country that decided to throw off the shackles of British Imperialism.

I think that they have thrown off British Imperialism. On my trips down there they referred to you guys as pommy's. I didn't get a precise definition or explanation.

I had a visit from an Australian on the 17th/18th and expect a return visit on 10 Feb.

Yeah - that's what they think - and what do they know!! as for pommies - that is the colour that white (vitamin D deprived) english people get when exposed to sunlight (regardless where it occurs)

One explanation I have seen re pom/pommie, is that it is a contraction of the acronym POHM which stands for Prisoner Of Her/His Majesty.
All capital cities in Oz EXCEPT Adelaide, South Australia, were settled by convicts from Great Britain.

BUT,
Myself and my dear wife, are also visiting the US,
We have a slight dilemma!
We are trying to book some form of transpirt/shuttle, to get us from LAX Airport, to our booked hotel, The Palomar in San Diego.
Issue seems to be one of confusion with us, re the shuttle services telling us we need to get a local LA taxi out of the Airport and to a LA hotel, THEN the shuttle picks us up!

Here's my question, for any on here in the SoCal area!
Who would like to have some US dollars donated to their Datsun habit, and collect us from LaaX and get us to San Diego?
Arrival info, flight gets in at 7am, on Monday Feb 17th, but by time we get through immigration etc, we expect to see the kerbside around 8.30 am.

Who's up for a donation for time, effort and fuel?

Oh, and we need a return trip on Monday 24th Feb, but i think we can get a shuttle arranged via our hotel??
