Speedometer cable length

Post by denniswagnerusa »

I plan to use the a mechanical speedometer setup in my SR powered roadster using Michael's pinion assembly and the 90 degree attachment. My present cable is toast, having a piece of cable lodged inside, so I'm looking to replace it. My present cable is 74 inches. I found a Nisson cable on EBay that is 70 inches that might have the right connections. Does anyone know if that is long enough? It is less than $30 with free shipping vs $80 for Dean.

Too much turkey today. Mind not working. Went to the garage and installed the old cable and it extended a good foot past the end of the transmission so the 70 inch cable should be even better.

Excellent! A little too long is much better than too short!

Got the cable in today and it seems to the right connectors on the ends. I cannot tell for sure because the car is at the mechanic. Will let you know if it works and whether the supplier has more at less than $30.

Using the advice of other forum posters I went looking for grease for the speedometer cable. Someone had recommended Shell Alvania 2 grease. It has changed names to Shell Gadus S2 V100. Apparently there are lots of companies making greases of equivalent specs for an lithium complex EP-2 grease like the Shell Gadus S2 V100 and I found one in my garage made by Valvoline called Synpower grease. Have gone through several speedometer cables over the years so will try to make this one last.
