Removing shift lever on SR20 DET

I need to remove the shift lever to install the SR motor in my car. The engine has already been on the frame so the mounts are all correct. How do you remove the shift lever so everything fits through the transmission tunnel?

There is a large snap ring under the boot holding the shifter in place. The shifter will pull straight up after the snap ring is removed
