Car

Alvin,

My guess it is a 68 with early solex's. It has the early steering box, early carbs and has no rear license plate lights mounted to the car, the 68 had them on the bumper.

Looks like a 68 to me. The VIN will tell the tale - unless that has been swapped around too.

The car was originally a smogged SU car. It still has the SU valve cover (no, it has nothing to do with the rivets...) The carbs are NOT solex carbs. They are Weber DCOE or DCOM (most likely the DCOE) and probably 45s.

If there is a VIN on the dash its an early 69. Those are webers not solexs.

The VIN plate has the engine # on it. If that matches and the VIN plate looks original there's a good chance it is. Otherwise you can't tell for sure unless the engine number is out of the range of engine numbers for that year. Check Rallye's website for approximate VIN/engine numbers for each year.

SSS doesn't mean anything on Roadsters; as far as I know it was never used on them by the factory. First there was the SS 410 (1200cc E1 engine) sedan (in Australia, but not in the US), then the SS 411 (1300cc J13 engine), then the SSS R(L)411 (R16), then carried over to the 510 and beyond.

hey AG,
No vin plate on the dash in 68.. it does have the optional "Oklahoma credit card" in the trunk, although the gas can appears to be missing. maybe an NOS can will come up on Ebay soon.

Arnold,

Some folks would have you believe that it has something to do with where the rivet for the baffle inside is place. That is not it though - that is just a production variant. The difference is that the SU cam cover has a clip riveted to the intake side rear of it. The clip is to hold the vacuum tube for the vacuum advance. The Solex cam cover never had the clip, thus never had the holes there. All of them have the boss where the clip was placed though.

Hope that helps!

Alvin,

SSS was a reference to a performance option on several Datsuns. You can find SSS emblems on E-bay all the time. The coveted piece in the 510 community is the SSS cylinder head which has an improved combustion chamber shape. I've never gotten a clear answer on just what SSS stands for.

You know who would know for sure, Spreadburry. Heck, the guy has a much sought after SSS coupe from Japan! If anyone around this forum would know it would be him.

I think the Early Datsun Homepage site refers the SSS as a Super Sports Sedan.
If someone has an avertisement from the 60's, could they have a look if the SSS acronym is expanded.

Oh, so I have a Solex valve cover on my SU car. Leave it to me to crack the expensive part

Anyone want to swap an uncracked SU cover for a slightly cracked Solex cover? :D

The cover alone is worth 3.2 horsepower!!!! :D :D

Maybe I should see if I have a "B" cam, could mean that the rough idle isn't a vacuum leak after all.
