replacing 4-speed trans with a 5-speed transmission

Post by phoxz »

Can I replace my 4-speed transmission on my 67 1600 with a 5-speed warner transmission from a 2000 roadster?

RE:Replacing Tranny

Post by S Allen »

Yes, you can but you need more than just the tranny. You also need the driveshaft, the tranny mount, and the backing plate that goes in between the motor and the tranny. You can read all about it by going here http://www.311s.org/tech/train/5speed.html

Dragging up an old one, But...
I'm in process of changing my 69 from 4 speed back to 5 speed and was just informed by a vendor that the 4 speed and 5 speed have a different crossmember, with a significant height difference where the trans mount bolts on, So if the 4 speed crossmember is used with a 5 speed, the trans sits way too high, and driveshaft angle is way off. Reverse if going from 5 to 4 speed. The difference seems like about 1.5 inches.
Looks like I have a 4 speed crossmember and need a 5 speed type or a sawzall and a welder.

Anyone with an opinion, or better yet a 5 speed crossmember, please chime in. Have that extra 4 speed if anyone needs. When it is all settled, the tech article can be updated.

Thanks

It should be just a different tranny mount. The x-member is the same for 1600's and 2000's. The mounting holes might be different, but this has been done many times. Check the link above.

Sorry, they are different, the 5 spd crossmember has a low profile to it and the 4 speed crossmember is around 1 1/2 inches taller just like Dave said.. Bill

I got the info from Dean. I thought the shifter looked a bit high. Luckily the trans mount self destructed on the way in, or I would not have persued it. This may explain some people's mysterious vibrations around 40 to 50 mph.

Dave, I just learned about the differance from Andy Cost. I just got a 1970 srl with a 1600/4speed sitting in it and on the X-frame.The crossmember, in a box, was alot taller than the other one that I already had on the shelf. Now realizing I had 2 different mounts and did not know which were which, I'll need to look under the spl with the u20/5spd I put in it. My vibration feeling might be what your talking about. Hard to say which crossmember I put in... Bill

Dean pulled a 5 speed crossmember off the shelf, said it was about an inch "riser" on it. Mine is more like 2 -2.5 inches, so it's a 4 speed.
Generally driveshaft imbalance is 40 to 50 mph, worse under accelleration or engine braking, not as bad coasting. If you end up with an extra 5 speed crossmember or need a 4 speed crossmember, let me know.

Just so I understand, you are talking about the crossmember (x member) of the frame?

I know that the tranny mounts are different, is this what you are referring to?

Leigh,

The rubber mounts are different, but can be made to interchange as their differences are basically in the bolt hole diameter for the mounting bolts. What folks are talking about is the crossmember that bolts to the bottom of the X member in the frame. There is a "riser" that the transmission itself bolts to. The 5 speed is a LOT thicker at the back end than the 4 speed. The crossmember makes up the difference as appropriate.

I found one for $25.00 shipped, better than $100.00 plus shipping

Will take photos of both for reference and post.

Anyone have a source for the rubber mount for less than $70.00??

Rallye shows both 1600 and 2000 rubber mounts for under $55.

I don't know the price, but if I recall correctly, Dean at Fairlady products had some made up in Urethane. A more permanent solution...

I believe Dean was $69.00 for Improved rubber mount, $79.00 for urethane, but don't quote me. Urethane is best bang for the buck, seems like every oil leak ends up on the trans mount.

Are any of these the part this thread is about (from Dean's website):

Image

If not, can someone provide a pic or link since I couldn't find it in the parts manuals or Rallye's site.

Thanks.
