Soft Top Install

So how hard is it to install a softtop? I've read this is something to leave to a professional but I'm a tight wad. Has anyone done this successfully on a first try? I've got the frame and the front bow and a new top ready to go. Do you start from the front or the back? Maybe from the side? :)

I've done alot on my car, and the softtop was something that I really did't want to mess with. If you blow it, you could be out lots of $$. To do it correctly you need to stretch the top tight, but not too tight. I wish I could have seen how it was done with mine. If you are feeling bold, go for it

I installed my own soft top. I followed the article on this site under Restoration Tips and also paid close attention as to how the original top came off the top bow and it was pretty easy really, you just have to take your time. I confess I had a pretty big lump in my throat starting out, but I did it and would not hesitate to do it again.....especially after the local place in Missoula that was supposed to be THE place for this kind of thing quoted me over 300 bucks to install MY softtop :roll:

You start from the front to the back.

You'll need to get a snap installer tool. They should be available at most button and bows places.

Another tip I can offer is that if you need to replace any of the twisties you can get them a lot cheaper from a boat place than the original types.
They have a sheetmetal screw attachment system but you can just use automotive quick nuts available at the autoparts stores to secure them to the body. I did all 6 of mine for like 5 bucks. Look great and are staying in place just fine.

As with everything you have to feel comfortable with taking it on especially when this is something everyone will see. Also is your intent for the car to be a daily driver or a show car? That being said I did mine about 15 years ago, and acted like "How hard can this be?", but on the inside I was freaking out. :shock: If you take your time, look at your old top, take some pics (back in the days of the Polaroid Instamatic), etc. it is not that hard. I put mine out in the sun the day before to help smooth out the fold marks from the box it came in. I also put it out in the sun for a few hours before trying to put it on to make sure it was nice and flexible. A second set of hands is nice to get everything laid out. Just check everything as many times as it takes for you to be comfortable before you make that 1st hole or trim any off by the bow. The site info is great, I wish I had it back then, all I had was a 3" x" 5" typed paper that had generic info. You can also trace the outline of your old top w/ chalk to use as a reference, but remember that it is only a reference!!! I accomplished what I needed it for, a top that looked ok from 5ft and kept the rain out. Most of the time the top is down anyway. I didn't use the springs that ran through the window posckets, mainly because they were not on the car to begin with. It's been fine without them so far. Figure on spending a good day on it, and when you finish in about 4-5 hours, sit back grab a cold one and admire the job YOU did.:D Good luck
