Hi Don here
I have a 70 spl311 that has been sitting for 8 years now, think I will get it going this year to drive or sell.
I was a Datsun/Nissan tech from 77-87 and always wanted a roadster ,in late 93 I saw many for sale in the paper . most were more bondo than steel, I wanted a 2L 5sp for sure .But I found one roadster a 1600 that was straight panels with just a few patches of rust although rusted thru. he wanted $1750 firm I passed 6 months later A 19 yr old kid had it ,he had bought for $1200, go figure. He had also beaten every panel with a bat?
I was going to weld the pulling nail to the fender and slide hammer them out ,i found that a quick weld and the dents popped out from the expanding heat- 75% anyway.
I got for $950 and was going to restore it in late April I could see it would be november before I was driving it ,so I just wrapped it up and painted it and recovered the seats
The 311 lost out to a 86 300ZXT that sits next to it now
My experience with working on roadsters at the dealership was kind of minor a lot of starters in the spring ,brakes, clutch cly, valve adjusts, tire work .elect.
I think I got more of them than the other techs because I worked next to the service writers and the other guys could hide quicker.
Another note; I drove a 72 510 2door- ( which seemed rare around here ) from 78-83 lowered with a header and took the secondary check ball out of the mikuni carb it was a purplish blue with datsun factory torque thrust wheels with that carb and lite weight it kept up with a lot of v8 couples in 1st & 2nd gear. With 30 mpg I explored every part of KC.
I had 3 or 4 guys at the dealership pestering me to sell it to them i sold it to one of them buying a 80 510 stick from a coworker .The 72 got run over by a 3ton moving truck, weeks later . So low the driver did not see it . Alan the guy I sold it to was trapped in it (foot caught ) crying ( his brother said ) he was ok ,crying because his 510 was done.
