Has anyone installed a quick release steering wheel hub in their race car? I'm getting tired of fighting my way in and out of a very tight Kirky seat plus I have been thinking about what I would do if I ever had to make a fast exit. There are lots of these things out there but what works best...Thanks...Steve

Yes, many times. This is one of those items that you get what you pay for. Multi spline hubs are better than hex hubs and the better ones have less slop in the spline shaft to hub fit and they also cost more.

The new NRG quick release is a flip-up. I love it. You don't have to figure out where to put your wheel while it's off.

The NRG is a very nice looking piece but I have an issue with putting the steering wheel any closer. The roll bar prevents me from moving the seat back and I'm already cramped in the car. I want to increase the distance if I can by changing to a flat steering wheel so the quick disconnect needs to keep everything about where it is now. Looks like there is plenty of stuff on the market so I can make something work.

There is a part we're not discussing -- the hub. you have hub/quick release/wheel.

It's going to be difficult to use all three and move the steering wheel away from you.
I've got mine about in stock position, with a Momo Prototipo wheel, and I haven't added the quick release yet.

The key is going to be finding a short hub that works.

On a racing version of the quick release the quick release unit is the hub and you drill the steering wheel to bolt directly to the quick release hub. You weld the splined portion to the steering shaft so you can make it any depth you want based on where you cut the shaft. I assumed you were asking for a race car not a street car.

I can see the limitations on a street car but going the cut-drill-weld route on a race car would let you set the steering wheel at a comfortable distance. How big a deal is it to remove the steering shaft...

I use my car for both, so I wasn't thinking about what I would call a "radical and irreversible" solution -- but that would definitely work!
