Toggle switch plate

Post by wlgipson »

The question is for a 1966 1600. Can someone tell me if the toggle switch plate (for lights, fog, wiper and heater) is supposed to be chrome? Mine is pretty worn and looks like brass that was once chrome.

It's a flat aluminum looking piece, not shiny chrome. I have seen shiny chrome and they look sharp!

Those plates, three of them, are brass.
I had mine re-chromed and WOW, they came up great!

The original finish was a brushed chrome.

Okay, so how did you get the instrument trim rings off without destroying them?

Hmmm!
That would be telling!
I took them to a Shop which specializes in instrument repair and restoration.
Now I had all sorts of methods in my head as to how they would separate ring A from gauge B.
It turns out that they just levered the ring up progressively around the circumference until it was able to be slipped off.
My chroming man was not impressed with that method, his main concern was the cracking of the chrome plating when they rings are crimped back on.
But my instrument man says "all will be well, we do it all the time". :?
