Thanks Rob, interesting that they are 15’s as I don’t think there were a lot of 4 lug VW’s. I’m a little partial to the EMPI’s since they are the first accessory I bought for my roadster. These wheels give you the same look as the EMPI’s without having to deal with the issues of two piece wheels, plus being 15’s the performance tire selection is much better.

Its the 114.3 pattern that fit many 4 lug cars of the time. The 4 lug Beetles are 4 X 130 I believe

Eight years later I "finished" these off with the rubber electrical harness boot that Dean now offers at datsunparts.com, part number 1800. Nice snug fit over the mounting nut. Thanks Dean!

Pulled my stock distributor and sent it off to Tom at East Coast Roadster for the EI upgrade. Had this on my "to do" list for a long time. The little R16 is patiently waiting for the new unit...

Got my fuel gauge. To read properly. Added new connections and "reversed" the two wires and took it for a ride. Only 49F but with the sun out and the new soft top was a marvelous day for a drive in Western New York.

I had a new windshield installed in my 70, but it is raining here so I can't bring her home! The soft top needs repairing so I had pulled it out a few weeks ago. I hope the glass shop is keeping her warm and comfortable.

Finally got my Black Friday purchase delivered after an epic battle with UPS over brokerage fees to Canada... they were trying to charge me $ 78.00 brokerage (over the $ 35.00 delivery, 16.00 duty and $ 15.00 Federal GST) for a $ 300.00 purchase that weighs 2 pounds. I did a self-clearance (get the paperwork from UPS and go to the Canadian Border office to pay the fees and get the magic blue B-15 form that says the item is cleared and fees paid) so it could be delivered. Federal border people charged me: $ 15.00 GST to clear the shipment into Canada... brokerage fees are a pure money grab from courier companies.

So, out with the old Momo:

On with the new Momo:

Bolted right up to the Momo hub adapter that I installed the old wheel with. Of course, the horn buttons wouldn't interchange so I had to pop them apart and transfer the Datsun emblem to the new one. Matches nicely with the Mt. Shasta wood shift knob that came with it when I bought it back in 2012.

Had a bit of a scary moment today when starting the engine. A loud ringing sound like a rhythmic ball peen hammer hitting a bell. So I disconnected the Alt and Water pump to isolate it. My worst fears were emanating in my head when I started the engine and the sound persisted. Oh Sh*T! But I got lucky the timing pointer protruding from the timing cover was making contact with the Crank pulley. I guess my thrust bearing is maybe wearing a bit? Anyways what a relief! Took a fine flathead file to it. Wish all problems were this simple.

Wait wait what? Are you saying that your crank is walking back and forth far enough to contact the pointer? I'm no expert but it seems to me that if the thrust bearing section of your main bearing is that worn you're gonna be in trouble soon. I had a crank issue where it was constantly being pushed forward, and after it wore out the thrust bearing it ate the crank which had to be replaced. It would also likely put stress on all the shafts as they are tied together by the gears and chains. Another possibility is that the rubber antivibration part of the crank dampener/pully is separating (it's two piece). Unless this is something that others have experienced and I'm just nieve, I think this warrants a bit more discussion or exploration (?)!
