This weekend I pulled the dash from the '69. It had an old cap on it that had been improperly glued so it split up the middle.\When they installed the cap, they glued around each gauge opening and each switch hole with black silicone. We spent several hours picking that suff out. We had to leave it in a few areas not covered by the cap because it pulls up/off the old brittle vinyl.
Have a new cap coming from Dean.
In the mean time, I'll replace the gauge lights with leds. Fix the heater temp control cable, repair the broken glove box interior, reline the console box compartment and generallt clean up.
I wanted to get a set of windshield pads from DatsunParts but he's out of them for a while. Luckily, the windshield inside trim doesnt keep me from reinstalling the dash.

What is the verdict with how the dimmer works with LEDs? I would order them immediately if I knew that they would dim.

In my car, with the LED's turned up all the way, the gauges are still pretty dark. You might not need to dim them anyway. Just a thought.

In my 68 I used some I bought thru Amazon. BA9S super bright. They have 5 square leds, one on each of 4 sides and one on the end.
Nice and bright. The dimmer works fine but I dont have them dimmed much.
The leds just fit in the housing so I dont see how to get more in there.
Im picture post challenged but I can email a pic if yoy want to see what the light is like once installed.

Yesterday I was trying to figure out how to install my Autometer water temp sender in the aluminum head of my 1600. As most of you know, the lower factory water temp sender hole uses a BSP threaded "nut." I had been reading that a lot of the Z-car guys cap off the coolant passage on the intake manifold. My thought was that I could do the same thing, then use the upper nipple location to install my sender. It turns out that Autometer includes an adapter that fits this location. It's a standard NPT thread.

So what I ended up doing was:
-Kept the factory sender installed and hooked up, even though it doesn't read right.
-Installed the Autometer sender in the upper hole, easy peasy.
-Removed the nipple from the water pump and threaded it into the intake manifold, then jumpered the return line to the feed line to bypass the heater core and the manifold, and to keep crud out.
-Capped off the water pump with the original NPT plug that came installed in it. Glad I kept it!

I don't have a top anyway...

People claim that the carb opening may frost up in colder weather if not heated, but the general consensus is that the manifold is heated to improve cold weather starting until the engine is warmed up and/or for emissions, neither of which I care about.
