I am disappointed these new plates were not made very close looking to the originals. I think they look better than the current CA white plates. Now I have to wonder to I spend the effort to get my old black plates back in circulation. Sounds like yes. I just hate all the dmv mumbo jumbo and I doubt my AAA peeps will know what to do to get the old plate back in circ.

Just to be clear for others, but I'm sure you know this: The old plates can still only be used under the "year of manufacture" rules. That is, your old black plates can be used on a car from the same era. They can't be used on a new car in the same way the fake "legacy" plates can be used.

To use the old ones on your Roadster, you need to get a sticker that matches the year of your car. Then you take that sticker and the plates to the DMV with your YOM paperwork. They check to see if the sticker has a number on it that is 1) valid from the year on the sticker, and 2) not in use as registered on another car.

The stickers are sold by guys on Ebay who go to junkyards, etc and scan old registration tags. then they check the tag/sticker number with the DMV to see that it is clear before they reprint the sticker. When you buy from these guys, they will tell you it is only guaranteed to be good for a short time (because some other dude may have also scanned the same old sticker number and is about to take it to the DMV).

Don't ask DMV... ask Dave!

On Ebay, just type in a search for "California registration Sticker 1968"

Wow, well written, a bit more info than I knew. Very appreciative!

I have a 68 but it is lic as a 69 which is the sticker I have. Purchased 2 years ago. I did not realize the sticker even mattered other than the year match your vehicle. I hope my sticker is still valid.

Thanks Dave
P.S. Which DMV do you work at? Ha Ha Ha..

Unfortunately, I just recently transferred from the Laguna Hills DMV, so I can't be the one to help you at the counter! Just look for me at the Bakersfield location - I'm the surly employee with the bad comb-over hairdo.

Got my new plates yesterday. They look original enough to get the idea but different enough to not look like knock offs. Just to see, I put them on the black Mustang and they actually look pretty good. Not as period plates but as plates that match the finish on the car. I may order a regular sequential set for that car. The bride's car is also black and if there was a way to get her personalized plates in black, I'd probably do it.

Greg, just always remember the rule for anything at the California DMV.. If you don't like the answer, go to a different window..

This is so funny because it is so true. The only thing consistent there is their inconsistency. They're predictable in their unpredictability.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. She has personalized plates and I'd llike to be able to order the same ones in black but I'm sure they won't make two sets with the same letter combo.

Sorry, but I just saw a new legacy plate yesterday on a 2013-ish Nissan Maxima. It looked kinda ridiculous.
