California Legacy License Plate Program

This seems pretty cool for us CA folks without original plates....

Yes, it's great. And disappointing for some people, who went to the trouble of sourcing the real thing. I obviously have mixed feelings about it.

You have an original letter/number combination. I'm not sure they will reissue those. I'd like to get my original number but I'm not sure they will issue it a second time.
Also the new plates will be reflective and not quite the real deal.

I pre-ordered a set since I didn't want the new California plate look. These won't be as cool as the originals but better than my current choices.

I wonder if there is a page where we can see the count of plates ordered so far?

Self.

Yes. It says there right on the website, just above each plate type. Yellow on Black is almost at 1000.

As someone with YOM plates, I must say I have mixed feelings.

Does anyone know the status of this? They seem to have met the number, they cashed my check, but I don't have a clue which, if any, of my choices they went with.

Yeah, I hate to be petty, but it kinda irks me that I went through the hassle of finding original old black plates and registering them under the CA "YOM" program, and now they do this for anyone for $50!!.
It devalues the process and product somewhat. I fully understand there are more people that want these types of plates, but they allow you to put them on ANYTHING. So now you can drive a 2014 Yaris with black plates???? A 1997 Acura with Gold 1950's plates?
In the YOM program, I had to get a number series that matched the year of my car (1968), AND I had to provide a registration sticker from 1968 (not a simple task). That sticker alone cost me a couple hundred bucks, plus the $200 or so for the original plates. I had to go into the DMV with all in hand and they even kicked it back once, saying my 1968 sticker wasn't the right color (it was). Once done, the black plates completed the vintage look of the car.

LMAO Alvin..

Edit: My real issue with them is I see this as a first step in retiring our vintage plates. The cops I have spoken to hate the old plates because their readers don't read them, and they have to manually enter the numbers.

Nothing will take away from the original condition plates in the original format. The old formats will never be repeated so I will always bow to your plates.
As for the possibility of them getting rid of the old plates altogether, I would guess not. The issuers are not the same people as the enforcers. If they were, they would have never adopted those symbols into the plates.

Now, a set of black plates might look pretty good on my new black Ford.

HA! Your Prius plates should say "GAS HOG", since I have driven my Fisker 7000 miles and only used about 40 gallons of gas. Plug-ins rule!

I wonder when these will ship. I am on the fence, I have an old set of plates restored and a set of the new ones on order as well. Not sure which to go with. The ordered ones would be custom where my real retro plates aren't but they start with VHT which is pretty cool if you know what VHT is.
