Standard BP6ES spark plugs okay?

Whilst installing my new GB dizzy, I discovered the PO installed NGK BPR5ES spark plugs. These hotter plugs are black and sooty.
Any reason I shouldn't replace these w/ the standard BP6ES plugs?
Bonus question: Any thoughts on why PO installed the hotter plugs?
Thanks.

I rec'd an answer from the mail list, so thought I'd post it to help someone else.

Black and sooty means running too rich. The PO might have been compensating for worn, out of adjustment, carbs. Go with the BP6ES and adjust the carbs properly. If they had been black and wet that would indicate oil. You would have had blue/white smoke out the exhaust also. Running rich you should have had black smoke and even some black liquid droplets coming out the exhaust on startup.

FYI: I did have black smoke on initial startup/reving the engine. Luckily, the vinyl garage door cleaned up easily.
