I figure with all the 67 SRL's being builtI had better put up a few pix of mine. So this is where I am at on restoring SRL311-00218 today. I have had this car for a little over 3 years, but hadn't been real serious about working on it because work has kept me very busy. I wrapped up most of the major (big) projects at work in September have had a little time to get back on 218. It is a Solex car with aluminum oil pan, oil cooler, LSD, aluminum flywheel, and all the other unique stuff. I do have the correct block and non-smog head, but do not have them in this car at the time. I plan on driving it a bunch and wanted to save back the original motor and head. So it gets this motor with B cam, .040 bore. I put the radiator on and a control box on the motor so that I can run it and tune on it some. I have no experience with Solex carbs and wanted to play with them while I am reworking and painting the body. I plan on the car to be black. Jury is still out on the interior, red or black.

I have some pictures somewhere of the tear down and will post them when I find them. I believe they are on the work pc.

You just need to rig up a steering wheel to your steering box and you can drive it around the block! If you do that make sure to get a video... Brakes? You don't need brakes...

I am surprised in the number of cars that are getting painted black recently. I've got a 69 body stripped down and going to the paint shop in 2 weeks, to be painted black...

I'm a little concerned that the body has completely rusted away...

Should be a beautiful example!

P.S. Bob, buy a wideband for tuning the carbs... you won't regret it.

I have one in the control box now (thanks Butch!!). I have been playing with it for about a week now. It has 55 pilots, 135 fuels, and 140 airs. It runs really well, but shows 10.9 on the A/F meter. It is very hard starting right now when cold. I can't get it to start on the choke. But I can press the throttle 6 times and it will crank, idle rough, and in about 30 seconds it will clear up and run smooth. I borrowed some jets from Butch and have been playing with it. It is still not right, and probably will change everything again when I have it driving. I have 55's, 135's, and 230 airs in it now. It runs at 12.9 now, but has a "snick" in it and dives to 10 with the blip on throttle. Since I am green on the Solex's, I figured this would let me tune on it while doing body work. Plus give me a little motivation to stay steady at it.

The tires are Generals. They are take offs from #33 and are new. I hate them, but figure I will burn them up pretty quick and can buy what I want later.

Bob, read up on the Solex tuning threads. What you have sounds like an issue with the accelerator pumps. You can actually change the pump jets in the carbs you have which will change the duration of the "squirt" when you blip the throttle. If yours dives down, you may want to try smaller pump jets, or else change the position of the connection to the pump rod.

What James said... but with that jetting I am assuming 34mm chokes and later Mikuni version carbs. As has been noted by others, I think you will like 37mm chokes (main venturis, often called chokes) better (also assuming solex or better grind on the cam), but then you are into probably 57.5 pilots, and somewhere around 155-170+ mains and 180-200+ airs. You can look down the carb throat and see what number is stamped on the venturi. I wouldnt change out the pump jets without first moving the accelerator rod to the bottom hole position (right guys? I'm not a Mikuni man anymore...) and seeing if that fixes the rich/ bogging problem. And you really won't be able to tell what it wants until the motor is under load, and you need the body on to do that!!! Really looking nice man...

P.S. When starting it, only hit the throttle twice, not six times... you're flooding it!!!! I have never used the starter system on any of the carbs I've had (Mikuni, SK, OER), and it's not even hooked up on my Dellortos now... After it starts, baby it and keep lightly tapping the throttle to get the accel pumps to pump and it will settle out quickly, then I warm it up by setting the hand throttle at about 1500-2000 rpms. Keep an eye on it, as I have walked away and come back to find it reving at 4000 once warm!

It will not start with 1, 2, 3, or 4 pumps, and I am pretty sure I am not flooding it. I have also already moved the fuel pump rod setting to the lower hole. You are correct on assuming 34's. I have a set of 37's and will put them in later. Maybe tonite??

I did play with it a little on lunch today and found that my starter jets had some trash in them. I cleaned and it started with no pumping. Motor runs really well and sounds even better.

I just started putting my dash together and had to share. I love it so much that I can't wait to show it. I am adding my own touches to 218, nothing that can't be reversed to put it back to original. I am loosing the black gauges and all the silver interior trim. I am going Chrome!!

I'm with you, I like the all chrome trim, far more classy in my opinion! It looks FANTASTIC!
I'll give you $5 Billion dollars for that 5 speed shift plate! (Granted it will have to be Monopoly money and very large denominations at that!)
