First Roadster

Hello everyone, i have been lurking the boards for about a month now doing my research and what not. I had the opportunity to pick up a friends unfinshed project. Well i pulled the trigger on it and picked it all up on Sunday night. I snapped this pics shortly after moving it into the garage spot and getting it all laid out to work on. As you can tell this will be a SR20DET swap, with a s13 transmission. The engine has a full fresh rebuild, from the bottom up, and will have a GT28 turbo. The frame is already notched for the motor and has the motor mounts attached. Sorry to the purest this car is unfortunitly not a "restoration"; someday I may appreciate a car in stock form, but for now i just dont

Tore apart the front suspension that evening, the car came with two full sets of front suspension so i am piecing it all back together after sandblasting and coating. One thing this will need is all new ball joints. Are there any ball joint upgrade options that any of you are aware of? I have 2 full sets of worn ball joints, do you know if these are rebuildable or if i am stuck replacing them? Anyway i will start a build thread in the coming weeks as i get the body on a permanent body mount, and get some more pictures taken. I am still trying to figure out what year the body and frame are. I know he had 3 total roadsters and took the best body and best frame from them and kept them. Off the top of my head i think the frame is '67 and body is '69? The frame has SPLxxxxx stamped onto the rails, im still looking for the body stamp, and waiting for him to give me a title.

EDIT: having issues attaching my pictures here at work, apperantly they are above the size limit. I will shrink them when i get home and try again.

Welcome to the addiction!
For ball joints, check with Rareparts.com, they can rebuild your old ones, and they have new available.
There is no stamp of the vin # on the body, just the ID Plate, so don;t look too hard!
Where are you located?
Looking forward to pictures!!

Thanks for the suggestion on the ball joints, i will contact them. My frame has the SPL stamped into it. I looks like someone at some point did this on their own however, it does not look factory. I havent found the one on the body yet, but havent really looked at the body much either yet.

I am located in cold arse Minnesota, lol. Needless to say this will be a nice project to start in our winter months. I will get the pics up when i get home

I purchased this car from a buddy, this is his website with the begining of his build; he was not a member of this forum, just NICO i believe.

If the silver body is the one that was saved, it is a 67. The roll bar in it is a factory bar - very cool.

The body that was saved is green, the body that i have isnt pictured in this one. The roll bar that is pictured on the silver one, was actually PVC pipe wrapped in foam and tape lol.

Well, if it was PVC, then someone went to a LOT of trouble to replicate the shape of the factory bar - including the angled support braces and such.

The green body looks to be a 68. The stamp on the drivers side front part of the frame is actually from the factory and the only thing you will find on the body is the VIN plate on the passenger side just in front of the cowl under the hood. If it isn't there you need to have a new one created based off of the title information and frame stamp.

You would have to ask him the whole story, i just gathered that the body looked good from far, but far from good. Rusted out where you couldnt see in the pics and such.
