Came across a 240z diesel.
Build years ago by somebody who traveled long distances very often (Netherlands - France).

Wow! I wonder how many miles per gallon he gets?
Cheers

There is a green 280Z diesel running around somewhere on the East Coast. As I recall, he got 40-50ish. It still had plenty of get up and go. He also made it a WVO vehicle, so it was odd driving behind it hearing the cackle of the diesel and smelling french fries coming from a sports car. I liked it though. I have often wondered how an SD22 would behave in a Roadster...

My uncle had an SD22 720 truck, so I have done lots of driving of one. Would have to serisouly change the rear end ratio, because 1st gear would bring you across the crosswalk, only, like 10 feet. Hell for reliable, great for towing small boats, but "roadster feel"? No.
Now if you turbo'd it.....
Might be good for a hyper-miler car, remove the windshield and go low profile.
Why do you get me started on these ruminations, Sid?

What was the stock gear ratio on the truck?

Today I checked my 240Z 2.8TD on the dyno to see how much power there was left.
A stock non turbo LD28 has 91pk at 4600rpm and 170nm at 2400rpm
The same engine now with an turbo (0.9 boost) and many road miles still has 130.5pk at 4263rpm and 335nm at 2452 rpm.
The fuel consumption was when driving arround 150km/h 1l:10km.
Not bad at all for an old engine.

Anyone have an idea of what that converts to in HP and torque in US (?) standards? That is almost a doubling of torque with the turbo... I bet it goes pretty good! Had a VW Jetta TDI for a time... it got out of its own way pretty good, and got 50mpg.

was waiting till I got back to work, all my best converters are here.... but had to look for auto-unit conversions on line anyway...
130.5pk translates into 132.4 US hp.
335nm translates to 247.1 lb-ft
150km.h = 93.2mph (you go buddy!)
1L / 10 km = 23.5 mpg @ 93 mph
10km = 6.2 miles, 1L = .264 gallons
With same frontal area, wind drag goes up with either the square or the cube of the speed (can't remember which), so I am guessing ~35+ mpg at 70-75mph mph, and with diesels you can really make the numbers go up if you get dwon intoa sweet spot, so I am guessing upwards of 40+mpg if you can manage to keep it near 60mph.
(try that in a 1st gen Z car!!!!)
from Wikipedia:
Metric horsepower is exactly defined as 0.73549875 kW (kilowatts), that is roughly 98.6% of US mechanical horsepower. Metric horse power is widely used in auto industry to indicate power of car engines in Europe and Asia. French, Japanese, Korean, German, Swedish, Italian and other automobile companies use this unit.
The unit can have different abbreviations -for example "CV", "PS", "pk" or "ch" but all translated to "horse power" or "hp" in English language.

Oops, forgto the stock numbers.
<< A stock non turbo LD28 has 91pk at 4600rpm and 170nm at 2400rpm >>
92.3hp @ 4600rpm and 125.4 lb-ft @ 2400 rpm.
both stock and turbo'd numbers are impressive, and proof why deisels are different to drive (lotta rowing with the shifter in traffic, but great on the open road) because they are turning such low rpms at speed, torque is down in the useable range.

Since there is not much fun with a 2.8 turbo diesel I am going to change it with a 280ZX turbo engine.
I found very good engine.
I removed it today out of the car and sold the rest.
Going to use a KMS management system and an intercooler to get some more preformance.
Is there somebody who has experience with these engines.

I would think that 247lbft of torque would be a hoot, especially on an autox course! But maybe there's turbo lag? I have no idea what I'm talking about of course...

Save the Diesel set up if you find a pickup or a Patrol
