New guy from North Idaho

Post by Thomcraft »

New to the fourm and just aquired my first roadster two days ago.
69 2000. Was told 34421 miles but I'm thinking 134421. Always wanted a Datsun roadster so my purchase was based on emotion. I love the car even though its probably going to cost me far more than the purchase price.
Having a hard time shifting down and it is probably because idle seem a bit high a 1500 rmp. Also diesels when i shut it down, again maybe idle too high and I'm guessing thats not just a simple screw adjustment. Just noticed oil leak around head gasket at rear of the motor, not a small one, six inch dia puddle in driveway over night. Guess i will start looking for a mechanic.

Welcome!
Please post photos, and put your location in your profile.
We can help you sort through the issues. There are at least one, possibly two fellow Idahoans here so maybe they have some recommendations for you.
Quick checks, a tune up with a timing check, check the carbs - float level and whether the choke or linkage might be sticking. For the leak, maybe as simple as tightening ore replacing the valve cover gasket, or re-torqueing the head bolts. Hopefully it's simple!
"When all else fails, force prevails!" Ummm, we're gonna need a bigger hammer here.

Dieseling usually is from the high idle. Always keep in gear when you shut it off should try to keep it from doing it to bad. Does is have sh carburetors? There's a lot of info for adjusting them in tech section.

Welcome.
Spend some time just prowling around the Wiki section. I've had a lot of, "I didn't know that" moments and I've owned my car for something like four decades.
