5th Gear Done Gone South

Yep, the mighty 5th gear has dropped on another roadster. From what I understand, the nut has probably backed off and the gears have slipped. 5th is gone and reverse sounds funny. I talked with Mike Young a bit today, and I'm planning on pulling the tranny myself and sending it to him for a rebuild.
Anybody have any good or bad experiences with tranny rebuilds? Whether rebuilding it yourself, or sending it to a gear shop. Also, while I have the engine out, what else should I think about replacing?
I've heard that some people drive their cars after the 5th gear neutral thing happens, but I think that is only when the 5th gear strips.
I guess on the plus side, I'll be able to clean and paint the engine compartment while waiting for the tranny rebuild.
Will, I can almost feel your pain, though I didn't just finish a stroker, I did just finish a front suspension overhaul.
