CRAP! 5th gear went South....

Well the black cloud of doom has struck again. After 1000 miles of trouble free driving, my 5th gear gave up this morning. On my way to work, jumped on the freeway went for 5th gear and I had neutral. 4th is good to go, 5th is no longer with me. Unfortunetly I'm really screwed now as I have no money to do a rebuild (all spent on the engine). On top of that, the waterpump started leaking as well.

Tell me about it. Things are in (slow) motion that will have me moving in your direction at somepoint in the not too distant future (possibly). Nothing is set in stone.

I drove my car for years with a bad 5th gear. As long as it's the gears press fit coming apart rather than the nut backing off the mainshaft, it's not a critical problem. You might want to swap the 3.70 rear back in temporarily if you're on the highway alot.

How does one tell if its the press fit or not without taking it apart? I wish I had a 3.7.
The flip side to this is that I get to use a Miata for awhile. It could be a long while, I need to pull the tranny and take it up to Mike Young so he can send it to his guy. Then I need to go back up and get it after its done. It looks like I'm eating really cheap for awhile....

Tear into it, fixing the tranny is no harder than the engine. Just make sure you pay absolute attention to how everything comes out...

If the nuts comming loose, you'll know. The whole mainshaft loosens up and that makes it difficult to shift into other gears and you'll get ugly noises as things move to places they're not supposed to go.
TR's right, don't be intimitaded by the transmission. I had more fun rebuilding mine than I had rebuilding any other part of the car. It's really very interesting engineering - how they built it and how it works.

No experience at this sort of thing at all, but if going to opening it up I recommend getting a gasket kit.

I have 90-95 % of a 5 speed plus some extras disassembled in a box if you are interested. I'm on the east coast, so shipping might be high, but let me know if you need some or all.

If you don't want to go all the way to Mike Young's I know an old Datsun tech that was trained in the 60's and 70's by Datsun. He also is the prior owner of Alvin's car. Needless to say he knows the cars in side and out and knows how to rebuild the trannies. He is in Modesto. Name: Bill Collins, Collins automotive. Chances are also that Herb Petty, lives in Modesto, may have the parts in stock to fix your transmission.
