Clutch slave cylinder
I notice in the online manual that some clutch slave cylinders use a spring and others do not. I wonder if it matters. It lists the spring for the 1600 but not the 2000.
Also anyone know the bolt size on the slave?

The spring is a good thing, Linda.
Keeps the fork taut with the adjusting nut and piston rod, and encourages the cylinder piston to fully retract, minimizing risk to the throwout bearing.

Well im not crawling under my car for ya....Linda
Mine was around 12-13 MM. bolt. And yes the spring is a good idea. Got mine from ACE...cause it was the place. Should be a small hole in the throw out arm to hole in rear engine plate I think...in that area.

So to be clear we are talking about the spring INSIDE the cylinder, not the outside one. My cylinder did not have one inside. Should I get one?

Oh, then no. I did not realize that you were talking inside. If the Slave came without one, then I would assume that is the design and you are fine as is.

Bolt size is 10mm 1.5. Be sure they are nice and tight

Well, I was actually referring to the spring! But thanks Linda! The one I had previously had a little notch in the eye the spring clips to as did my clutch arm. Somehow that spring would work its way off.Linda wrote:Bolt size is 10mm 1.5. Be sure they are nice and tight![]()

I asked the bolt size, but found the size today. One was loose, which I think may have affected shifting. Anyway slave cylinder is now rebuilt.

Slave cylinders with springs inside are usually of the self adjusting kind. As the clutch wears the piston travel moves down the bore.

That explains why the diesel transmission has a non-adjustable rod from the slave to the clutch fork. The spring was a later addition. Particularly for the slaves that were "self-adjusting".
No need for the inner Spring assuming you actually adjust free-play.
