Lake Michigan Circle Loop

We are trying to make a route for a northern loop. Meaning taking the ferry from the Milwaukee area across to the Muskegon area and looping back. I'm not familiar at all with the Michigan side of the lake. Any suggestions for routes or sites to hit or areas to avoid?
