Here's a recommendation: Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

With a little Simple Green and water they do a good job of cleaning whitewalls. They even got out the black marks from tires being stacked on top of each other without having to do a lot of rubbing.

I think the thing to do is just stay on top of keeping them clean.

Great tip.

Smartwax "carpet cleaner", it's a mild citrus cleaner, also works great.

That Mr. Clean eraser is AWESOME, they are also great for cleaning stubborn stains on Upholstery ( I have tan interiors in two of my cars).
They are also awesome for cleaning the sides of boats - while in the water with them!

They take off SHARPIE markers. Has to be some kind of voodoo thing. BTW, Simple Green is really good to get a water stain out of fabric, it was the only thing that worked on headliners after a sunroof leak.

The Magic Eraser's voodoo is melamine foam.

I always keep Simple Green around. It's great for cleaning bike chains.
