L16 Piston, will they work in an R16?

Post by zippy67roadster »

I found a set of L16 pistons that are new and just wanted to know if they would work in an R16 engine. Anyone know the answer?

Bore x stroke of R16 is 87.2 x 66.8mm
L16 is 83 x 73.7mm [L18 is 85 x 78mm]
Methinks the bore is too large for the L series pistons :(

Just wrap a bunch of duct tape around them. Good to 200 mph so they say.

I saw something on here about the VG30 pistons. The one builder in Australia sells a kit with pistons and H beam rods that are much lighter. I suspect that is the VG30 pistons. I found the rods available in CA for a bit less. I'd have to search for them again.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

L series pistons are both dished and heavy. I think stock compression on an L16 is 9:1. They are also heavier than any other piston I have ever picked up.

That said, if you really wanted to use them for a turbo build, you could sleeve the block down to fit and go that route. I don't know why you would want to though.

Combine these with a set of R16 rods and I think that is how you get a long rod U20. I'm not sure on the piston to valve clearance however.

Hey Graeme,

Digging up and old post. Trying to locate pistons for a R16 and found this topic. Would you know if the VG30 pistons can be machined to have the dome added and maintain stock (or slightly higher) compression for a stock 3 main R16?

Thanks

No sorry, I was simply comparing the piston dimensions as listed in the relevant Workshop Manuals.

:( Was hoping you had found the miracle piston that just need a dome machined into it to replicate stock.

Nice, but Pedro has a 3-main R16.

Pedro, I suggest you start a new post in Classifieds Wanted for what pistons you want.

Yep, we have them in stock in .020, .040 and 3.5" Bullet proof forged domed pistons. Expecting more .030 inventory any day.

Modifying pistons that don't fit is for amateurs...Silly to waste hours/days of your time for a 1/2ass result when truly excellent, top quality pistons are available...

These are drop in using your factory rods. These are better by a mile than any cast piston:
