Hi all. I was at Barrett Jackson this weekend texting to Shannon. The car was attracting a good bit of interest while I was there and it did look very nice but frankly I agree that for $108k there were some obvious faux pas like spinners on bolt on wheels and the low $$ steering wheel. On the plus side the leather seats looked and smelled great, the canvas top was a gotta have it, and the car ran like a top. The owner was there talking to the group of us about the car, and his intent which was not to restore the car to factory but to make it into something special. I think with a flat dash and wood inserts to go with the leather he could have had a Healy substitute, and the silver paint looked elegant. It was great fun to attend and I met some other roadster folks who didn't know about the forum so I gave them the details, we may find them here.

In the auction listing, I think the vendor tried to make it clear that originality wasn't his intent... He was going for drivability overall, and obviously the personalization that goes along with that - not to mention apparently $105k on the job - GOD PLEASE let it be worth $33k!

From the purist standpoint, a non-original car for $33k is good news. But, I think the consensus is most of our cars benefit from a little bit of distraction from originality... Hence the cupholder, electronic ignition, stereo and myriad swaps that keep this forum hopping and worth coming back for. I guess I am of two minds because my largely not original 69 is as much or more fun to drive than my 95% correct restored 67.5 2000.

I hope the person who bought the car turns up here eventually! I still really want to see under the hood.

I go to the auction when, I can. For a car enthusiast, it's the ultimate show. When I started going 10 years ago, it was more about the classics (Cadillacs, Packards, etc.) and much smaller. It's huge now. You can no longer park at the venue unless you're a VIP. You park near the freeway and they bus you in. A lot fewer classics, more about the muscle car but, I still enjoy the auction.

When I stumbled across a Datsun Roadster, I about dropped my beer. You see Z cars now and then but, I've never seen a Roadster at Barrett Jackson. I talked to the owner, very nice guy. The engine was not as detailed as the outside but, it had a nice set of Webers on it. The filled in emblems didn't bother me. The paint and body were extremely nice. I was happy to see it bring good money. I can't believe Speed TV didn't televise it crossing the stage. I taped the auction on my DVR and it sold during the commercial break. As many Chevelles, Mustangs, Vettes, they sold, you would think they would want to show something different.

It's the third one to go at the main auction, one of about 15 at the other lesser known auctions.
