UPDATE: as of Feb 28, 2012

I have completed a good deal of the preparations for this event and I am now ready to share the details.

I have all the event information posted here: http://www.myautoproject.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ORIGINAL POST: Just kickin' tires here. Curious if there would be any interest next spring / summer in meeting in Sicamous(?) for a roadster day, etc.

I'm thinking Sicamous because it is a logical midway-ish between Vancouver and Calgary (closer to Vancouver) which would accommodate the majority of roadster owners in both provinces (farther for me but I can suck it up) and maybe not too far from some northwest US guys to come.

No matter where it is people are still going to have a day of driving to get there.

Anyway thoughts?

Dave

Maybe the Alberta guys can muster in Calgary and head west from there?

Sounds good to me... I volunteer my place as the muster point. Central Calgary, really good coffee maker.

You ought to make it Solvang North with info on hotels, motels, and camping. And maybe pick the driest time of year with an alternate in case there is a freak snowstorm:-)

Kimberley would be great... Or maybe Penticton? Or if we did Kelowna or Vernon (a little further but...) the drive on Westside Road the length of Okanagan lake is UNBELIEVABLE in a roadster... A little dangerous, but some absolutely phenomenal corners. And my Uncle owns a Big O Tire store in Westbank and I'm sure would love to sponsor a Show and Shine at their shop! But I'll go anywhere...already told the Missus.

I only selected Sicamous or Salmon Arm to save the Alberta folks from a really long drive. Kimberly is a no go...too far out of the way for the Vancouver area folks. Anywhere in the Okanagan will work but again a really long drive for the Alberta folks. Remember a guy like Arnold would have to come from Medicine Hat if he wanted to attend.

I would support the Westside Road venue. The Westside Road is a wicked and dangerous drive with quite a few roadside memorials along it. I know it quite well as I drive it a dozen or so times a year (we have a summer place on the lake about at the half way point). I have always thought the locals should close it down a day per year for car and bike enthusiasts to safely enjoy similar to "Tail of the Dragon". Most of it has a 70 km/h (45mph) posted speed limit but I have never seen a radar trap between Bear Creek Provincial Park and the North Okanagan First Nation boundary. So, 20 miles with about 100 turns on a road with little or no engineering.

There are some other cool drives in the Okanagan to consider too and with not a lot of traffic in late spring. Other spots?

I would definitely be in for a meet somewhere between Vancouver and Calgary.

Garth, the drive is great (went to HS in Kelowna) but one thing to keep in mind is that the Alberta folks will have a long full day drive just to get to Kelowna so doing another drive may not be the biggest draw.

Flip it this way, if the meet were in Golden or Banff, would the Vancouver guys want to go? That is about the same for me to get from Edmonton to Kelowna.

We need to try to be more centralish if this is too happen I think. Of course that is just my opinion and I have driven 18 hours just to look at a car so maybe I am not normal.

I have another suggestion for the Alberta folks needing a rest stop. I live in Armstrong, which is 10 mins from the start of Westside road to Kelowna, and it is about 40 mins to Sicamous. We don't have too much for hotels (1 in town), but I know we have a great campground, the Kin RV park. I am a Kin member, and we could use the campground, and have access to a fully modern building (kitchen, hot showers, etc) with a meeting room with seating for 65 people. It could be a great place to sit back and unwind after the run to Kelowna on Westside road, show photos/videos on the large projector screen, etc.
A suggestion about Sicamous would be to look at the Crazy Creek Hot Spring between Sicamous and Revelstoke. Salmon Arm(20 mins west of Sicamous) would be almost half way between Vancouver and Calgary

Interesting options Jim. I've driven past that Crazy Creek a few times and never gave it a second thought. If we get all the way to the Okanagan, I have a passing interest in stopping in Grindrod and asking what is up with all those hubcaps. You know the place!

I guess we won't be "Alberta Bound!!" You guys pick the time and the place and I will help organize the west coast. Don't forget that you will also be able to draw Washington, Idaho, and Montana, and even some Oregon and California hard core owners. Its a great idea whose time has come. Maybe Arnold will get a car carrier and bring one of each....

Ross...excellent!!!

I would love to see some of the northwest US people come as well. Maybe we will have to share some Okanagan sunshine with everyone.

Just had a brilliant (in my opinion) thought. The Knox Mountain Hill Climbhttp://www.knoxmtnhillclimb.ca/ is in May every year and it includes a car show (which I think gives you free or reduced entry fee plus prime parking for the race). This event is fun to attend and of course Kelowna is a great home base for a gathering such as this. I am wondering if we added the Hill Climb / car show to our activity list and remembered that this is a long weekend (in Canada) the drive from Alberta is more palatable. May 19 -21, 2012?

What say you Alberta people? BC people?

Arnold, I think Ross has given you a challenge.

...and wondering if there are any race spec roadsters whose owners would like to give this a go.
