Replace SU's with Solexes?

Post by drbob »

I just acquired a '70 2000. It's been in my circle of friends for >20 years so I know the history. It has the B-cam and had Solexes, but SU's were put on ~1980 to meet smog requirements. I still have the Solex assembly as it was removed.

The engine was recently rebuilt and is running well now with the SU's but requires constant tweaking to keep a smooth idle. I'm tempted to switch back to the Solexes. While this is not my daily driver, I would like it to be somewhat reliable (at least no worse than now).

Any thoughts on whether or not to switch from the SU's to the Solexes?

Also, the old Solexes will require rebuilding for sure, having been sitting for 20 years. Any suggestions for a rebuilder (I'm in Pasadena CA)?

First off, welcome and thanks for participating. I have no personal experience with the solex carbs. I have had a ton of experience with the SUs and I love them. I have heard of problems getting the solexes set properly and there are more moving parts on a solex than an SU. Maybe someone with more solex experience will be able to answer your question better. I think with the B cam the solexes are the right way to go. Many people have problems dialing the SUs in as well. Sorry I could not be of more help. As to getting them rebuilt-Classic Datsun Motorsports is probably your best bet. They are listed on the vendor page on the main web site 311s.org and are located in Soutern California. Good luck.

The solexs should be set up all ready so that won't be a big deal. You will have to balance them, and probably ajust the pilot jets, but beyond that you should be set. If the gaskets look good give them a shot, If they leak give Les at CDM (Vista) a call or Stan Chernoff ( he's in Torrence I think)
Good luck,
