Center console map light???????? Looking for ideas

So i am toying with sending my console to just dashes to get it restored right. I was checking out my console today and was looking at the map light. I have a few issues and i am looking for some ideas. First of all the lens and the outer chrome screw ring are in good shape. The plastic white part it screws into that houses the bulb and spring for the push button light however is cracking and falling to pieces I am not so concerned about the inside portion of the console but would like to have the light portion original looking. I am trying to figure out a good alternative for the source. I would like to use an led for the light and even better would be battery powered so i don't have to run wires to it. I have put pics below to see what you think. I would love to keep the click button functionality if possible. The flashlight is just me messing with it. i wanted to see how the led looked through the lens.

I did the same basic thing as Keith, explained in this post.

It does involve wiring, but it's simple wiring. Just a cigarette lighter. It ends up looking pretty cool.

Here's what mine looks like:

I had to use the lighted cigarette lighter base because the regular one was just a hair small for the maplight hole. I will probably replace it at some point, but it works for now. The little flashlight thing is pretty cool - it lights up blue with an LED when not in use, and is a pretty bright light when you turn it on.

Looks good. I went to home depot and gotmsome plastic epoxy. I super glued all the little peices together (atleast the ones left) and yhen put thin layers of epoxy on it. It is now rock solid. now i have to figure out how the light componets actually go in there and if i have all the peices. I really want something that will keep the push button on and off function an would like to stick to the stock housing whatever light is in there.

You got me thinking there. I could probably use another "power outlet" more than a map light so I might try to modify the exterior part of the maplight to cover a cigarette lighter socket. That way I would have the power and keep the stock appearance.
