Transmission Oil Capacity?

Hi,

my 66 1600 is finally a driver but the transmission howls a bit after a few minutes drive. Does anyone know the oil capacity of the transmission? It is the 4 speed tranny.

I want to check and change the oil to see if this helps.

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks!

Hey, by the way, where does it 'go in' ?

In the manual I see a "2. - plug-taper thread' on page 116 but no ref to filling the tranny with oil. The drain plug is obvious, but the filler is elusive.

The filler is on the side of the tranny about half-way up. It's a bear to fill in the car. Take the plug out, get the plastic bottles of gear oil, cut the tip and slip a rubber (preferably clear vinyl so you can see) hose on the end, stick it into the tranny and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze til oil just starts dripping out the side - then it's full, replace the plug and you are good to go!

About half way up the trans. on driver side. Square plug head unless changed to something else. Between trans and frame rail. I use a small hand pump for gear oil...fits quart bottle. Napa, Walmart

Definitely get one of those "kits" at the auto parts store for this one. It's a gallon of gear oil and comes w/ a pump that screws onto the top. It also has a barbed fitting that you stab into the fill hole and it keeps it in place while you're pumping. It's a good workout btw.

Cheers

You can buy the pumps for the smaller jugs as well. FYI.

Thanks all,

FYI, opened the drain, maybe 1 shotglass worth of oil came out. Filled it using a funnel and a long piece of tube I had, worked great and much less noise.

Thankfully, I only drove a couple of miles without oil.

Now the only question is where did all the fluid go?
Is it leaking around the gasket, at the drain plug? Check that fastenes are tight and then I'd say keep an eye on it, don't mess with it if you don't have too.
Wait for a perfect "while I'm there" moment before tackling the transmission!!

I have been messing with transmission stuff for the past week now. To fill it isn't too bad if you put the car up on jack stands with enough room to get the gallon jug with pump under there. You might as well do the diff while you're at it and already a greasy mess. It only take 10 minutes more time.
