My new SPL311!!

Post by zippy67roadster »

I just purchased 1 of the 5 lost Roadsters in Las Vegas( see separate post). It is 1967 SPL311-08935. My plan is to make it into a vintage race car over the next 2 to 3 years. I figure that by then the kids will be old enough to come to the races and we will make it a family affair!
You can see in the pictures that it has been in the Vegas desert for some time. There is a thick layer of sand and dust over everything. It did have a hard top on so it minimized how much sand was in the interior. It has a solid rust free frame and floor pans as well.

The doors have damage/bondo on them and the hood has a dent and bondo as well, so I got two good doors and a straight hood in the deal. I took the straight, but slightly rusted, grille as well I paid $500 for the car and extra parts.

When I got it home I noticed that the drivers fender is from a 68! That isn't a problem as it is straight and I planned on putting a set of 68 fenders on anyway for the larger flares! The passenger fender has some damage and is a 67 so it will need replace with a 68.(anyone have one for sale?)

The side trim is very good with just a flat spot at the end of the drivers quarter piece and a dent towards the middle of the drivers fender piece. The door pieces are free of any damage. All the trim has some pin stripe tape on them but should be easy to remove. I am looking to sell the trim if anyone wants to make an offer.

It has a stock fender mirror with the original glass that isn't broken that will go in the sale pile as soon as I get time to remove it. I will make a separate post for the parts I am selling once I remove them. i will also add pictures as I go along.

I have been removing the bumpers, tail lights ect.. just to get an idea of the body work that will be needed and to get it ready for blasting. I knew there was some bondo in the drivers rear quarter when I bought it. Once I looked in the trunk and saw that the metal was never pulled out I knew that it was amateur hour! i took a screwdriver to the first crack I found and after some work I popped off what you see in the picture! I have already popped out the metal enough to just have to hammer and dolly it back to a point I will only need a skim coat of fiberglass filler.

You know, we should start a new thread about the sins of the PO. Just with photos of some of the meat headed stuff that has been inflicted on these poor cars. Too bad Bob didn't get that picture of the skunk...

Like the tennis ball holding the bondo screen in place in my quarter panel/rocker? I think the winner is the wooden 2x4's jacking up the rear spring mounts, forgot who that was.

I saw a 68 in MKE with a fuel cell "held"/mounted in the trunk with (literally) two 2x4s. I sure hope Steb took pics before he fixed this one!

The work has been put on hold as we are buying a second house and all funds are going to it. I also don't want to tear it down too much as moving it in one piece will be easier than a bunch of pieces. I also want to make sure I don't lose any pieces in the move, if they are still attached then I have less of a chance to do so.

Well we finally are settled into the new house. We had a pool installed and all the landscaping done, including some pavers. Now it's time to get going on the race roadster project. I am having the concrete poured for the over sized RV parking on the side of the house which includes a 12 x12 pad for a new shed. I plan on having power run to the shed for a parts cleaner, media blast cabinet and an oven for powder coating.

The last 2 nights I have started to tear down the engine bay to get the engine ready to pull. There is about a 1/4" of dirt caked on everything from sitting in the NV desert so long , but every nut and bolt has come off with no problems. I have taken the clutch master and slave off and rebuilt them. I have removed the brake master and rebuilt it. I have removed the wiring harness, carbs and intake and freed the exhaust manifold. I will remove the exhaust and manifold tomorrow night. I took the hood hardware off and the radiator overflow and washer bottle. I removed what was left of the interior before the move and started removing the chrome and trim. Once the shed is in I plan on taking off the windshield and the doors.

Here are some pictures of the progress so far. I must say there have been no surprises with the tear down yet. The only non-stock item I found was an electric fuel pump was added.
