Nissan's VVL SR20 Head

If you are not familiar with this variant of SR20, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VVL_engine" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In short, VVL is Nissan's version of Honda's VTEC and it was only found in FWD cars, the Primera(or G20 here). 200hp/150tq stock!
It is a very common swap for G20/Sentra owners here and one of our friends even put one in his B13 Sentra SE-R(very light chassis):
un-tuned, and on a Mustang dyno:

It is FAST, no turbos or superchargers, just raw NA power!
We dyno'd the same motor in a heavier chassis(P10) G20 and it made 186hp/145tq with stock exhaust system and no tuning at all!
Rob at ZCG is about to swap in this drivetrain(shown at top) into his G20. I was surprised that they are going for $600-$900!

I will update on progress, but it got me thinking about doing a head swap onto the RWD block. You may remember this 510 that was built recently with lots of hybrid parts to make it work:

How cool would it be to make over 200rwhp NA! It's a head swap away :D

As I have not bought my Sr20de motor yet, is there anything big different from a Sr20de S14 to a Sr20vvl? Yes Alvin I to love the idea of 200+hp at the wheels plus no turbo. Looks like it would need a new intake manifold. Does anyone know for sure if a Sr20 5 speed would/should bolt right up? Looking around it seems the VVL motor is more readily available. I also like the VVL idea for picking cams. Go with the largest plus still have the drivability below 5k.

very different
it's fwd configuration and vvl solenoids get in the way of the firewall
then you have to figure out what to do the with distributor as it too will hit the brake lines/firewall

mazworks makes a kit but it's not cheap :P

to me, it looks like the whole drivetrain is moved up forward
This setup looks very hokey, and they are still using a fan clutch to my surprise, but it's the only VE I know of:

Looking at the kit to convert it is not cheap. You are so right! Hmmm I can understand why you have only seen one. Think I will stay with a Sr20de S14. To bad the price is to high for the install :smt005

Autech versions of the S15 SR20DE are amazing engines-- but pretty rare...

We are putting one in Diamond Dave's Miata:

Alvin, the link that you posted to this thread is broken, and I can't seem to find any more information on their website. Any ideas on the correct link?

^No.

"The Autech model runs the Spec S SR20DE engine however it has been moddified by Autech to produce an additional 35hp through the use of a different ECU tune, extractors, higher lift and duration cam shafts, sodium filled exhaust valves, higher compression ratio and a lighter flywheel."

ps isn't it a trip 3years later...RCMike has actually done this swap!!!!

RCMike's engine swap is the business. In fact, now I want one. Sooo... SR20VE is a regularly a fwd situation, did RCMike take an S14 SR20DE and swap heads and VVL internals? Regardless, it's the hotness and I'm kind of jealous.

super hotness!
typically you take the entire FWD head from the VVL engine and place it on a RWD block. Hit Mike up for details.

RCMike's is an s-14 block modified to accept the VVL internals and head. there were minimal problems with the solenoids and the CAS because of the recess in the stock roadster firewall.

The mazworks kit is more of a parts buying guide than a "kit".. It really is more suited to someone building this engine for an s-chassis.. They solve the issues related to a flat firewall, but roadsters do not have a flat firewall, so moot..

The RWD block must be modified to allow the FWD head to bolt up. The sophistication of the mods really depend on what you want to do..

The most interesting challenge so far has been management. We will see how it works next time, now that we have the physical architecture and electronic monitoring talking.. We really think that a miscommunication between the two caused some major issues. Should not be a repeat of that..

Good luck!
