I have a '69(+) SPL that has a strange electrical component mounted between the SUs and threaded into the manifold.

My previous '69 (-) SPL had the same Air pump gear as my current SPL, BUT DIDN'T have this electrical component.

My question is, WHAT the HECK is IT?

Thanks :?:

Unless I am mistaken, that is actually a 1970 model and the electrical doo hickey is the anti-backfire valve.

Thanks for the information.

I don't think that part is going to make it back on the car after I rehab the beast!!

Thanks Again!

Nope... it is a purge valve, unique to the 1970 models (USA & parts of Canada).

They TRIED to reduce evaporative emissions on the 1970 models by adding electrical stuff (clutch out, car in gear, opens the valve to help suck fuel vapors in the engine). Yes, you'll discover a switch on the clutch pedal, additional connections on the transmission.

Notice the top of the SU float covers? There is a "Q" shaped hose. Rather than venting the float bowls to the atmosphere, they vented to the air cleaner. Long story, but the "vacuum" on those lines help raise the float level, and make the car run richer at highway speeds.

There is a 1970 Supplement for "emission control" with all these wierd details in it. My book is in storage someplace (haven't seen it in years), so I might be foggy on a few of these details.

No progress on the project car... so like any typical roadster owner with a dead roadster.... I went out and bought ANOTHER dead roadster to park along side it. :D

Need to get the shop built so I have a place to work (two years without a shop has gotten old).

ROFLMAO!!! Dead roadsters are like dead roaches. You rarely find just one... They tend to multiply!

So, are these both low windshield 1600s? Are you out of the 2000 business?
