Yet Another Clutch Question

70MTRoadster again,

I put in the stock 2L pressure plate, throw out bearing and clutch disc. I used the "short" clutch fork sleeve this time. Before, when I first put in the 5 speed for my 1600 I used the "longer" clutch fork sleeve and I could not get the darned clutch adjusted right.

With both the short sleeve that is in there now (and I put it in after reading something about all this here and on the Bluebirds list regarding Roadster 2L clutches in 510's) and the longer one I had in there before with the stock 510 pressure plate and t.o.b., I cannot seem to keep freeplay adjustment. I remove the spring...adjust the rod and jam nuts to give just a little "play" (maybe an 1/8 inch or so) reattach the return spring and then after a couple of pumps on the clutch pedal....boohoo....no more free play. I have intentionally put in a TON of free play and this is still taken up by the clutch mechanism again.

Let me know what is going on here if you can.

Scott:
I had a similiar problem on my 4-speed.
The fork lever was partially dis-engaged from the ball pin located inside the housing because it had not seated properly in the lever socket and jammed against one side the spring instead of both sides of the spring being clipping around the ball post. The side that jammed had slipped between the ball and socket, so only one side was retaining the lever to the ball.
Once I got the ball back in the socket with both sides of the retaining spring holding it in, I was able to adjust the clutch play correctly.
Hopefully this is also the case with yours.

Scott,
Also, check that the clutch master cylinder is returning fully in its bore, if it doesn't fluid may not be able to return in the reservoir and thus pumping up the slave.

thanks you two for your input. This morning I checked and sure enough, clutch pedal free play, BEFORE the clutch is actuated. Then, no free play, so now I have two things to check and I'll bet I'll whip it.

I'll keep you posted............
