Over the last week the Roadster has developed a rather noticeable whining noise coming from the front driver side of the car. I'm getting the sinking feeling it may be the front wheel bearing.

The whine starts after the car has been running for a while at freeway speed but will stop with a tap of the brakes, then come back after 5-10 miles.

If they are bad, will a good packing buy me sometime till after Shasta or am I just asking for it?

Just so all possibilities are considered. They could even be your brake/rotor making the noise...

Yes, just a tap of the brakes at speed and it stop for a 5 miles or so..

If it stops for a longer amount of time, it may be the bearing or the brakes.

The bearing is super easy to repack. Remove the cotter pin, take the nut off, remove the caliper, pull the hub assy off. Clean and repack, tighten snugly (the wheel must still spin freely, but without a rattle or knock)...

While you have the caliper off, check that the pads are OK and are returning easily. Clean everything, replace the pads if necessary. If there is glaze on the rotor or pads, hit them with a 220 to 320 sandpaper to remove the glaze (don't breathe the dust!).

That should cure the problem and will only take a few hours out of one evening...
