Speedo Cable 90 Degree Adapter

Is there anyone out there who has opted to NOT use this adapter with success? Any pictures of the routing of the cable without this adapter? Any other tips or ideas for this?
It doesn't seem worth $220 just because the rod/pin is missing.

If you are looking for the rod/pin try your local toyoyt dealership ask for part no. 83798-17010, aprox $10.50 for this part. It is used on 91 camrys speedo adaptors.

Dave found a pin at a Napa store that worked fine. I don't recall the part number.

celicas too! between the sensor for the abs and the tranny. the supra also has the 90 deg adaptor on the auto tranny models

Currently diagnosing inop speedometer. Hooked drill to trans end of cable and cable turns freely and gauge works smoothly. Removed drive assembly from trans and found badly worn , 16 tooth brass speedo drive gear. How do i remove the drive gear from the assembly? Im assuming that I just drive the small pin out but as a novice mechanic, I thought it might be wise to confirm before I make any silly mistakes.
Also.While searching posts about this process, I keep seeing references to a 90 degree adapter that should be on my car. (67 1/2 1600) but as you can see from the picture, that is not what I found. Has some PO switched it out with the wrong assembly or is this normal on some cars?
Also any thoughts on brass versus nylon on the replacement gear?

I recall a couple of early 1600s that I had which had brass gears. They looked just like that

spl310 , so are you saying the gears look normal? I assumed the concaved shape of the teeth was wear. Perhaps I have a different problem?

My two cents: The teeth look shot. That gear must mesh with another internal gear. Are you able to get light into that area and inspect that gear it rides on? Hopefully that looks good? You just want to be sure of the root cause before you buy and put another pinon gear back in IMO. (Maybe no 90 degree adapter is the root cause?) Meantime you have brass floating around in your Tranny. I'll let people with more experience chime in if you should flush and refill your Tranny oil once you get it sorted out.

The photo is of a worn brass pinion in a pinion sleeve. If a right angle adapter is fitted, a collar screws onto the external, screw portion of the sleeve, the cable screws into the other end, and directs the cable forward on a shorter route toward the engine, instead of sideways toward the rocker panel, which will require a foot or so radius loop back forward and a longer cable. Depending on what rear end ratio and tire diameter you run, you may need up to a 20-tooth red pinion and the clocked sleeve required for 19-24 tooth pinions. (I have a new spare in the Nissan box if needed.)

DAC21 ,currently car is just on jack stands as I dont have access to a proper lift. I tried shining a pen light into the housing, but because of limited space under the car I could not get a view of the internal gear. It feels a bit rough when I put a finger inside. I'll have to figure out a way to get a better view. I'm still not clear if the right angle adapter is a stock item on the car or an "aftermarket" improvement that some have added to their vehicles. Anybody want to set me straight on that?
Im pretty certain that the rear end is stock as the car is almost completly stock and unmolested. The P.O. did install 15 inch wheels and tires (196/60/15 tires) Im not sure how much that specific tire size might affect the speedometer accuracy. Im thinking flushing the tranny would probably be a good idea with that much wear on the brass pinion gear.

The 90 degree angle adapter is from the factory and correct for all years of 1600 4 speeds. I have no idea why it was designed to have one while the 5 speed did not. From reading up a bit a few owners have run (maybe unknowingly from the PO handy work) without one provided they could find a longer speedo cable which was not a Datsun option, but probably some aftermarket cable. With the OEM factory 16 tooth pinon and your 195/60/15 tires you are running at a questimate of 3-5 MPH off from actual @60mph. There are some calculators out there to be more precise. Or a GPS device in the car could determine the difference. (if you have a working speedo for comparison) If you get it sorted out I have an extra NLA OEM 16 tooth pinon (nylon) available. I really doubt the brass version is available as it was only used for the earliest 1600's.

DAC21, thanks for the additional information. So, it sounds like somewhere along the line a P.O. eliminated the right angle adapter as my car does not currently have one. I guess that in addition to replacing the pinion, I should also order the right angle adaptor and a new cable to insure that it is the correct length. I have found the pinion at several of the vendor sites but have not researched the right angle adaptor and new cable. Can anybody point me to the right vendor for these parts from experience?
