Datsun Color Code 665 Yellow

Post by Mr Half of Me »

Hey All. I'm going to paint my engine bay (currently black). I'd like to match the stock color exact, or as close to exact as possible (original color on this car was red). The car is currently yellow but it's not the stock color and too bright/dark for me. I have a rebuilt U-20 going in, so I want to paint the engine bay now, and match the rest of the car at some point in the future (read; when I can afford it).

Rallye lists the cross-reference of Datsun 665 Yellow as PPG # 81768. I called my local Automotive Paint Supply Store to see if they had it. They were very helpful, but said the PPG color is not a current color.

Does anyone have a different cross-reference number for 665 Yellow.

Thanks in Advance.

Keith Downing

p.s. if anyone in the Southern California area has a stock 665 Yellow Datsun, and has a part I could borrow to get a color match from, I would certainly appriciate it.

Nice! Don't forget to take the red caps off of the overflows - you will have all sorts of odd problems if you don't remove them. For the color yellow, if you can't find the exact OEM match, look at Springtime Yellow for a 1966 Mustang. Pretty close!

Here's a nice pale yellow on a Porsche:

Thanks guys, I really like those colors, and they would work better than what I have now, but I'm really looking to match the stock Datsun 665 as close as possible. Otherwise, it's just a free-for-all, and I can't be trusted in that situation :-)

This is mine, and it's just too bright.

Here's a side by side comparison. Mine is the brighter one. Don't know who the other is (I'm sure we met, I've just forgotten).

I believe this is Victor Laury's car. I don't know Victor, but he's here in So Cal. Perhaps I should drop him a line.

Thanks All,

I think the first one is Bill Cole's car from Oregon.
The second is Victor's car. He is in Eagle Rock. His car was at JCCS also.

Compare those to Ron Eastman's roller paintjob:

IIRC, he used Almond Gloss from Rustoleum as it is very close to the stock yellow...

I'm doing the exact same thing you are doing.........sort of.. my car is now red, but originally it was 665 yellow. I too am pulling the engine to get to the clutch. I eventually(when I have spare change!) paint back to yellow..
I used this as a guide.

Hi Keith, Yes, the roadster in the middle photo is my car. I remember visiting with you at Solvang, we talked about your eventful trip from Texas. The paint on my car is not original paint but it is an original 665 car, one of the previous owners had it repainted and the paint matches very well but their prep work was not much to speak of. If I find any paint info in my paper work I'll let you know. I believe Victor mentioned that his 70srl still has the original paint on it...Nice looking engine.. Bill

I have the same color-665.I made efforts to get it,and got the recipe from germany. It`s like this:
PPG code NIS665
Quality:DG PB DELTRON
Component Nominell tolerance Accumulated
700 1232,50 -1.23/+1.23 1232,50
705 39,10 -0.05/+0.05 1271,60
703 26,10 -0.05/+0.05 1297,70
---------------------------------------------------------
sum(q) 1297,70
sum (ml) 999,93

It doesn`t tell me very much, but maybe a pro. I got mixed one litre, and painted by a pro.
no difference in color.

when I purchased the car from Ohio in 2006,there was a long scratch on the rr qt panel .
first I tried to find a yellow color on a flip board ,but I realised, yellow is not only yellow.
So I started searching on the -net in USA,no success, via different european countries, but none of these companies had existed long enough to have recipe of my color.
Finally I got a hit in Germany, which directed me to an old norwegian company, which again directed me to a local carpainter only 200 yds from where I work. The world is a small place. He ordered it for me by my recipe and did the paint job.No chance to see any difference in the colors.
